Police question another BI director<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A former Bank Indonesia director,
\nHendrobudiyanto, cut short medical treatment in Japan to attended
\nJakarta Police Headquarters last night and answer a summons
\nregarding his alleged role in a bank scam.<\/p>\n
Hendrobudiyanto's lawyer Amir Syamsuddin told The Jakarta Post
\nthat his client, who should have spent an additional three days
\nin Tokyo, returned early as an act of goodwill.<\/p>\n
\"As a good citizen, my client decided to comply with the
\npolice summons,\" Amir said yesterday.<\/p>\n
As of late last night, the questioning of Hendrobudiyanto was
\ncontinuing and a large number of print and broadcast reporters
\nhad gathered outside the detective unit's office.<\/p>\n
City police had summoned Hendrobudiyanto and three other
\nformer central bank directors several hours after they were
\ndismissed from their positions Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Hendrobudiyanto was BI's director for private foreign exchange
\nbank supervision, while the other three directors have been
\nidentified by police as: Paul Soetopo Tjokoronegoro, director of
\nmarket operations; Heru Soepraptomo, director of legal affairs;
\nand Mansjurdin Nurdin, director for the supervision of private
\nnon-foreign exchange banks.<\/p>\n
When asked to attend police headquarters for questioning
\nTuesday, only Paul and Heru immediately complied, a senior
\nofficer, who did not want to be identified, said.<\/p>\n
Police were unable to locate Hendrobudiyanto on that day as he
\nwas scheduled to fly to Tokyo at 11 p.m. for medical treatment,
\nthe police source said.<\/p>\n
Amir said he had sent a letter to city police saying that his
\nclient could not meet the police summons because he had to
\nundergo medical treatment in Tokyo, he said.<\/p>\n
The other director, Mansjurdin, is believed to be in
\nMelbourne, Australia, the source said without providing further
\ndetails.<\/p>\n
The charges against the men remain unclear because police and
\nother related parties are remaining tight-lipped about the case.<\/p>\n
But a police report states that the four were summoned for
\nquestioning in relation to bank scams worth trillions of rupiah
\nat Bank Arta Prima, Bank Dwipa, Bank Asta, and Bank Perniagaan.<\/p>\n
According to the police source, interrogators only questioned
\nthe three about the bank's structure and organization and the
\ndirectors' authority.<\/p>\n
\"We could probably charge them after questioning is completed.<\/p>\n
\"It's just a preliminary probe,\" he said. \"It's easy to arrest
\nthese men but it's difficult to prove their sins.\"<\/p>\n
Earlier, police arrested four former employees of the central
\nbank, identified as Johny Panjaitan, Conny Gumelar, Joko Priyanto
\nand Hari Cahyono for their alleged roles in the Bank Perniagaan
\nscam.<\/p>\n
Amir, who is also representing Paul and Heru, denied yesterday
\nthat the questioning of his three clients was based on reports
\nmade by certain parties who disliked them.<\/p>\n
Separately, city police chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata said the
\ninvestigation had not been completed and none of the four
\ndirectors had been charged with any crimes.<\/p>\n
\"Give us time to investigate the case. We will announce it
\nlater,\" Hamami said.<\/p>\n
He denied media reports that the police had arrested two of
