Police provide contrary stories on shooting<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The police have given conflicting accounts of
\nhow a plaincloth officer shot dead two alleged street robbers at
\npoint-blank range on Jl. KH. Moch. Mansyur in Tambora yesterday
\nmorning.<\/p>\n
The two victims, Umang, 30, and Suherman, 35, were shot at
\npoint-blank range by Chief Sgt. Sularwo, a local police officer,
\nafter the suspects attempted to rob him at 2:30 a.m. near a
\ntraffic light on the West Jakarta street.<\/p>\n
According to Sularwo's superior, Maj. Chairul, the chief of
\nthe Tambora subprecinct, the officer was in his Kijang minivan
\nwhen the two robbers -- both of whom were ex-convicts --
\napproached his vehicle while Sularwo was waiting at the traffic
\nlight.<\/p>\n
\"One of them suddenly threatened the officer by pointing a
\nmachete toward him and asked for some money.<\/p>\n
\"Instead of complying with their request, Sularwo swiftly
\nopened the door of his car to hit the robbers,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"On recognizing that their victim was a police officer, the
\ntwo tried to flee,\" Chairul said, giving no explanation on how
\nUmang and Suherman, who had been listed as among the most wanted
\ncriminals in the district, could have identified their victim.<\/p>\n
Sularwo then fired his gun \"to paralyze the victims\".<\/p>\n
From their possession, police seized a machete and two
\nwristwatches with broken straps.<\/p>\n
\"We believe the watches were snatched from other victims,\"
\nChairul said.<\/p>\n
City police deputy spokesman Maj. Nyoman S. gave a different
\nversion of the fatal shooting of the two alleged robbers by the
\nTambora detective.<\/p>\n
Speaking with the media yesterday, Nyoman said Sularwo was on
\nduty monitoring the area when the two alleged culprits passed
\nhim, pointed a sickel at him and grabbed his wristwatch.<\/p>\n
\"His first four warning shots in the air were apparently
\nignored by the culprits. He eventually aimed at their feet but
\nstill the robbers kept on assaulting him, which injured his left
\nhand,\" Nyoman explained.<\/p>\n
As he was completely cornered, Sularwo finally aimed his gun
\nat the heads of the robbers, he said.<\/p>\n
Umang and Suherman's bodies were sent to Cipto Mangunkusumo
\nGeneral Hospital for postmortems. The sergeant is still under
\nquestioning regarding the shooting.<\/p>\n
\"We'll run a cross-examination as usual. If he did not violate
\nany regulations and he did it based on the threatening situation,
\nthere will not be a problem,\" Nyoman added.<\/p>\n
One of the culprits, Umang, has been on the Tambora police's
\nmost wanted list for some time.<\/p>\n
\"Umang specialized in theft and robbery. The other victim,
\nSuherman, was also known as a hoodlum in Angke,\" he added.
