Police probe shooting between officers<\/p>\n

Authorities are currently probing an alleged shooting incident
\nbetween officers from the National Police headquarters and
\nNational Police internal affairs during a raid at a gambling
\nhouse in Taman Palem, West Jakarta last week.<\/p>\n
Chief of National Police internal affairs division Insp. Gen.
\nSupriyadi said on Sunday that the division had questioned several
\npolice officers from the city police but suspected only one had
\ntried to protect the gambling house.<\/p>\n
\"We are still probing the case. We are questioning intensively
\none officer from the city police for protecting a gambling house
\nfollowing the incident,\" said Supriyadi.<\/p>\n
A police source at the National Headquarters said on Sunday
\nthat a police officer identified as Adj. Comr. S, who was
\nassigned to lead city police officers in the raid last Wednesday
\nevening, had been questioned and detained for two days by the
\ninternal affairs following the raid of the gambling house.<\/p>\n
He said that although S was released after two days of
\ninterrogation, he remained under investigation.<\/p>\n
A team from the city police conducted a raid in a gambling
\nhouse in Taman Palem last Wednesday evening, where they met with
\npolice officers from the National Police.<\/p>\n
\"Nothing happened in the beginning as although the two teams
\nhad no prior coordination, they could share duties,\" the source
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
However, instead of directly arresting the owner of the
\ngambling house, identified as Iwan K., and dozens of gamblers in
\nthe house, several officers came and talked with him in his
\noffice, said the source.<\/p>\n
He said while Iwan and the officers were talking, another team
\nfrom the National Police internal affairs arrived and saw the
\ndetectives talking with Iwan, whom they were supposed to nab.<\/p>\n
Apparently feeling intimidated and humiliated by the presence
\nof the internal affairs team, several officers from the National
\nPolice drew their guns and started firing into the air.<\/p>\n
Officers from the internal affairs responded by firing their
\nguns into the air as well, suggesting that they were not
\nintimidated and ready to fight.<\/p>\n
The incident didn't escalate into an open fight as both
\nparties managed to keep their cool, the source said.<\/p>\n
\"Probably somebody had called the internal affairs division
\nafter seeing the city police officers discussing something with
\nIwan instead of arresting him,\" he said.<\/p>\n
It is rumored that the Taman Palem gambling house hands over
\nbillions of rupiah to the city police and National Police every
\nmonth to protect their operation.<\/p>\n
West Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Suhardi Alusius said Iwan
\nK and all the gamblers in the house had been detained.<\/p>\n
\"We arrested 169 people at the site, but detained only 34 of
\nthem, including Iwan K because we have evidence to charge them
\nunder Article 303 of the Criminal Code,\" Suhardi told The Jakarta
\nPost.<\/p>\n
He denied that there had been shooting during the raid, saying
\nthat his subordinates had not reported it.<\/p>",
