Police postpone Anton questioning<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The police interrogation of Anton Medan, alias
\nM. Ramdhan Effendy, for his alleged role as an agent provocateur
\nin the mid-May riots has been postponed until further notice.<\/p>\n
\"Well, the police said I may go now. The investigation of me
\nhas been postponed. No timeframe was given,\" Anton, an ex-convict
\nturned Moslem preacher, told reporters after being interrogated
\nfor 3.5 hours at the Jakarta Police Headquarters on Monday.<\/p>\n
The police interrogation team was led by Capt. Arismunandar.
\nHe was accompanied by Chief Sgt. Tobing, Chief Sgt. Sutarlan and
\nFirst Lt. Haryono.<\/p>\n
None of the officers, however, were willing to comment.<\/p>\n
But Badaruzzaman, one of Anton's 20 lawyers from the
\nIndonesian Legal Aid Foundation, said it appeared the police
\ninterrogators had run out of questions.<\/p>\n
\"Up to this point the police have not yet revealed any solid
\nevidence or proof of his alleged involvement in provoking the
\nmasses on May 14,\" Badaruzzaman said.<\/p>\n
However, the police could summon Anton again if it was deemed
\nnecessary, he added.<\/p>\n
Anton explained: \"I'm very concerned by the accusations (of
\nhis involvement in the mid-May riots).<\/p>\n
\"The police summoned me as a suspect, but they did not clarify
\nany evidence which pointed to me being a suspect,\" the preacher
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"I want the police to explain about my situation and my
\nstatus ... I felt awful. People are judging me,\" Anton told the
\njournalists.<\/p>\n
Since he was named as a suspect in the mid-May riot several
\nweeks ago, Anton said many of his colleagues and followers have
\nabandoned him.<\/p>\n
\"I'm a preacher. I deliver lectures every night. People have
\nstarted to doubt me and asked about my involvement. Several
\ncommunity groups have even canceled my lecture programs.\" (edt)<\/p>",
