Police post in Galur attack<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Hundreds of local residents in Galur district,
\nCentral Jakarta, destroyed a police post and threw its contents
\ninto the Kali Sentiong river yesterday afternoon.<\/p>\n
No fatalities were reported as no officers were on duty at the
\nnon-permanent police post, but almost all the contents, such as
\nfiles, traffic equipment and wooden shelves, were lost.<\/p>\n
The attack was launched following the death of a local
\nresident, shot in the head by a member of the Johar Baru police
\nsubprecinct on the previous evening.<\/p>\n
According to City Police spokesman Lt. Col. A. Latief Rabar,
\nthe policeman, identified as Chief Sergeant Yuliansyah, led a
\nteam at 7 p.m. Wednesday to the subdistrict to follow up reports
\nof a bitter dispute between locals and residents of Kampung Rawa
\ndistrict, on Jl. Galur.<\/p>\n
The warning shots fired by the police were ignored, Latief
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"Due to the large number of residents, the police team failed
\nto disperse the clash and Yuliansyah was overwhelmed by the
\nattackers, who intended to get hold of his carbine,\" he
\nexplained.<\/p>\n
Yuliansyah fired his carbine, hitting Chaerul Dasuki, 30, in
\nthe head, the police spokesman said.<\/p>\n
He added that Yuliansyah and two of the residents, whose
\nidentities were still withheld by the police, are being
\nquestioned.<\/p>\n
The two communities in the area have been involved in many
\nfights. The latest serious clashes were recorded in September and
\nDecember of last year, leaving two dead, including a woman killed
\nby a stray bullet.<\/p>\n
Police and residents said that many ex-prisoners and criminals
\nreside in the two districts, causing round-the-clock tension.<\/p>\n
The attack on the police post on Jl. Suprapto yesterday
\noccurred at about 3 p.m.<\/p>\n
Members of the Central Jakarta police and military precinct
\nwho came to the scene an hour later and residents living next to
\nthe police station told The Jakarta Post that in the beginning
\nthe angry mob wanted to go to the Johar Baru police precinct on
\nJl. Tanah Tinggi, which is about three kilometers from their
\narea.<\/p>\n
\"On their way there, the crowd turned back as they saw a large
\nnumber of police and military members ready to block them,\" said
\na police sergeant.<\/p>\n
Fatal shot<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, he added, none of the police and military
\nmembers were assigned to safeguard the Galur police post.<\/p>\n
A resident, who refused to give his name, said: \"The security
\nmembers came about an hour after the crowd had vented their
\nanger.\"<\/p>\n
\"So, none of the attackers were on the scene when the police
\narrived,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Earlier, he said, an hour after the clash of the two
\nneighborhood communities and the fatal shot, hundreds of the
\nangry people threw stones and destroyed part of the 12-square-
\nmeter police post.<\/p>\n
Lt. Col. Imam Basuki, head of the Central Jakarta military
\noffice, told the Post at the scene that his office was still
\ninvestigating the attack.<\/p>\n
\"I've been informed about the shot last night, but we need to
\nfind out the motive behind the attack on this post,\" Imam said.<\/p>\n
He also admitted that a number of ex-prisoners and criminals
\nwere believed to take part in the clash Wednesday evening and the
\ndestruction of the post yesterday.<\/p>\n
Imam, however, refused to comment, saying that he needed to
\nfurther discuss the incident with the head of the Central Jakarta
