Police post attacked<\/p>\n
GARUT, West Java: An angry crowd set fire to a police station
\nin Pameungpeuk subdistrict and ransacked a nearby police
\nofficer's house Sunday in what appeared to be a senseless
\noutburst of violence.<\/p>\n
Local police chief Col. Sukamto was quoted by Antara as saying
\nyesterday an investigation was underway but no arrests had been
\nmade.<\/p>\n
In Jakarta, Deputy National Police Chief Lt. Gen. Lutfhi
\nDahlan was quoted by Antara as saying the violence was sparked by
\nrumors a policeman had killed a fellow officer.<\/p>\n
Lutfhi said that on Friday, the Pameungpeuk police held
\nroutine shooting training during which Chief Corporal Juju
\naccidentally killed himself.<\/p>\n
"The public has not been harmed whatsoever by Juju's death. We
\nare saddened by his death, but it was an accident," he said.<\/p>\n
The fire was the second case of arson in West Java in the last
\nmonth. The first was when a mob burned down a police post in
\nPelabuhan Ratu, Sukabumi, alleging police inefficiency in
\ninvestigating a local teacher's death.<\/p>\n
Sunday's incident was started when a group of people marched
\n2.5 kilometers from Mancagahar village in Pameungpeuk subdistrict
\nand gathered in front of the police station and hurled molotov
\ncocktails at the building.<\/p>\n
This happened shortly after a group of youths ransacked Chief
\nCorporal Bambang's house, about 200 meters from the police post.<\/p>\n
There were no casualties in the incident that lasted for an
\nhour before troops came in and contained the violence. (swe)<\/p>",
