        "content": "<p>Police pledge to protect churches<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Police personnel nationwide pledged on Tuesday that they would<br>\nbeef up security at churches during Christmas and New Year's Eve<br>\ncelebrations.<\/p>\n<p>The Police bomb squad will comb churches in search of bombs<br>\nbefore Christmas sermons were held, and some churches would be<br>\nequipped with metal detectors.<\/p>\n<p>Every church leader in South Sulawesi will be tightly guarded<br>\nby police officers, everywhere they go.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the South Sulawesi provincial police department<br>\nofficers will also deploy four to 10 officers to guard each<br>\nchurch in the province, according to chief of South Sulawesi<br>\nprovincial police Insp. Gen. Saleh Saaf.<\/p>\n<p>South Sulawesi province is home to 683 churches.<\/p>\n<p>In Bandung, police officers said they would intensify security<br>\nat 36 churches in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Bandung police chief Sr. Comr. Sulistyono added that there<br>\nwould be metal detectors at some of the larger churches in the<br>\ncity, while Bandung police would deploy some 7,200 officers at<br>\nall 36 churches, in addition to the bomb squad officers, who<br>\nwould be on high alert.<\/p>\n<p>The tight security measures are not only stepped up at<br>\nchurches but also in shopping malls and other public places in<br>\nBandung.<\/p>\n<p>In Medan, some 2,600 police personnel were ready to be<br>\ndeployed at 529 churches in the city during Christmas<br>\ncelebrations. On top of that, the Medan city government has also<br>\ninstructed local subdistrict and district heads to help the<br>\npolice guard churches in their respective areas, said Medan city<br>\nspokesman, Ramli.<\/p>\n<p>In Sidoarjo city, East Java, a senior police officer called on<br>\nchurchgoers not to bring large packages that might raise<br>\nsuspicions.<\/p>\n<p>Adj. Sr. Comr. Ronald F. Sompie, the chief of the Sidoarjo<br>\npolice, urged churchgoers to bring only Bibles during Christmas<br>\ncelebrations, in order to make it easy for police to check them.<\/p>\n<p>The tight security measures at churches have been standard<br>\nprocedure nationwide since 2001, following a simultaneous,<br>\nmultipronged bomb attack on churches in several cities across the<br>\ncountry a year earlier, which killed at least 19 people. --<br>\nAntara<\/p>",
