Police, parties plan joint security posts<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City police and the 48 political parties
\ncontesting the June 7 general election agreed on Saturday to set
\nup joint security posts to help secure the polls in the capital.<\/p>\n
The agreement was concluded during a meeting between senior
\nJakarta Police officers and some 100 representatives of the
\npolitical parties' security forces.<\/p>\n
City police chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman said the joint
\nsecurity posts, to be set up at the Jakarta Police Headquarters
\nand the eight police precincts in Greater Jakarta, were designed
\nas a place for the police and the parties' security forces to
\ncoordinate their efforts.<\/p>\n
\"We hope the security forces from all poll contestants will
\nbe active during the campaign and the polls,\" Noegroho said,
\nadding that the police would help support the security forces.<\/p>\n
According to Noegroho, the first post would be located at
\nCity police headquarters on Jl. Sudirman in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The post will be inaugurated on Monday.<\/p>\n
Noegroho said similar posts would be set up at the five police
\nprecincts in the city and the three police precincts in
\nTangerang, Depok and Bekasi, which are under the supervision of
\nthe Jakarta Police.<\/p>\n
The posts will be under the coordination of the head of the
\nJakarta Police's Center of Command, Control and Operation, Col.
\nSoenarko.<\/p>\n
The operations of the posts will be accountable to the city
\npolice, which also will provide the political parties' security
\nforces the supplies they will need for their activities, Noegroho
\nsaid without giving further details.<\/p>\n
Separately, Col. Soenarko reminded the parties' security
\nforces always to be on the alert for the presence of provocateurs
\nwho might disrupt the campaign.<\/p>\n
As reported earlier, the General Elections Commission (KPU)
\nhas set the campaign period for the general election from May 19
\nto June 4.<\/p>\n
According to Soenarko, any campaign always will be attended by
\n\"wild\" people who are not invited.<\/p>\n
\"It's difficult to handle wild people. Therefore, we should
\ngive extra attention to these people to secure your parties'
\ncampaigns,\" he told the party representatives.<\/p>\n
Several representatives at the meeting suggested making a
\njoint pledge to secure the polls in the capital.<\/p>\n
However, Noegroho rejected the idea, saying that such a pledge
\nwas not necessary.<\/p>\n
\"The important thing is that you keep the pledge deep in your
\nheart to make the polls safe,\" he said.<\/p>\n
In response to a representative's question, Noegroho suggested
\nall contesting parties immediately inform the police if their
\nparty's flags were torn down by members of other parties.<\/p>\n
\"It's a theft. Just report it to the police. We'll probe the
\ncase.\"<\/p>\n
The flags, banners and pamphlets of several political parties
\ncan be seen on buildings, public facilities and trees along the
\ncity's streets, including Jl. Warung Buncit and Jl. Mampang
\nPrapatan in South Jakarta, and Jl. Basuki Rahmat in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Parties' flags and pamphlets also mark streets in Tangerang,
\nincluding Jl. Gatot Subroto, Jl. Perintis Kemerdekaan and Jl.
\nMerdeka.<\/p>\n
Many residents have complained that the flags and banners
\ndeface the city.<\/p>\n
However, many street traders see business opportunities in
\nparty symbols. Vendors are selling a wide range of political
\nparty-related goods, including flags, stickers, postcards,
\nheadbands and T-shirts.<\/p>\n
These street traders can be seen selling their goods along Jl.
\nMampang and Jl. Warung Buncit in South Jakarta, Jl. Senen Raya
\nand Jl. K.S. Tubun in Central Jakarta, and Jl. Jatinegara in East
