Police officers attacked by unidentified men<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Two police officers from the National Police
\nHeadquarters were assaulted by a group of some 20 unidentified
\nmen in Ciracas, East Jakarta, early Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The wounded officers, Pvt. second class Yusuf Antoni and Pvt.
\nsecond class Nawi Ritonga, failed to identify the attackers but
\nsaid they all had crew cuts.<\/p>\n
According to city police spokesman Lt. Col. Zainuri Lubis,
\nboth Yusuf, 22, and Nawi, 23, sustained severe injuries to their
\nbacks, heads and chests.<\/p>\n
Nawi is in intensive care at Soekanto Police Hospital for a
\nstab wound to his back.<\/p>\n
Lubis said the incident took place at about 1 a.m. when the
\ntwo officers, still in their uniforms, left a food stall on Jl.
\nRaya Ciracas.<\/p>\n
\"Around 20 people encircled them as they were about to get on
\ntheir motorcycle,\" Lubis quoted the two officers as saying.<\/p>\n
Police believe the suspects watched Nawi and Yusuf from a
\ndistance for some time before the attack.<\/p>\n
After surrounding the two men, one of the assailants asked the
\nofficers whether they were part of the police's elite Mobile
\nBrigade unit.<\/p>\n
When the officers said they were not Mobile Brigade members,
\nanother of the attackers shouted that any police officers would
\ndo.<\/p>\n
\"The man then pulled out a knife and attacked the two men.
\nOther members of the mob then followed, hitting the two officers
\nwith various objects close at hand, including stones and plastic
\nchairs,\" Lubis said.<\/p>\n
The few people in the area could do nothing but watch the
\nbrutal attack.<\/p>\n
Food stall owner Seger later told police he did not dare
\nattempt to stop the attack, which took place in front of his
\nstall.<\/p>\n
\"He (Seger) told police the unidentified men were vicious and
\nlooked like fellow policemen,\" Lubis said.<\/p>\n
After the two wounded officers fell to the ground, the
\nattackers fled the scene.<\/p>\n
Late on Wednesday afternoon, a police detective disclosed that
\none of the attackers had been arrested.<\/p>\n
\"We're still questioning him at Ciracas Police station,\" the
\nofficer, who asked for anonymity, said.<\/p>\n
He refused to provide further details.<\/p>\n
The officer, however, said the attack might be related to
\nMonday's attack of a police sergeant.<\/p>\n
Late on Monday, Second Sgt. Yudi Supriyanto from the On-Alert
\nUnit at Jakarta Police Headquarters was beaten and stabbed in the
\nneck by two unknown men at a small park near his house in Pasar
\nRebo, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
