JAMBI: Jambi Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Bambang Sudarisman
\nurged businesspeople to use a police escort when depositing or
\nwithdrawing large sums of money from the bank.<\/p>\n
\"The police have deployed officers to escort bank customers
\nwho want to deposit or withdraw large sums of money from the
\nbank,\" Bambang said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Robberies targeting individual bank customers are more common
\nin Indonesia than robberies of the banks themselves.<\/p>\n
Many of the victims have worked for companies that have a
\nregular schedule for withdrawing and depositing money in the
\nbank.<\/p>\n
Bambang said bank customers were easy prey for criminals who
\nstake out banks and watch customers make their transactions.<\/p>\n
Making use of police escorts would reduce the number of
\nrobberies of bank customers, the officer said.<\/p>\n
However, he said only a few people had made use of the
\nservice, which he said was free of charge.<\/p>\n
Asked what steps one should take if officers refused to
\nprovide an escort, he said: \"Report the officer to the police
\nprecinct, and if that doesn't work report it directly to me.\"

Illegal miners do damage with mercury<\/p>\n
BENGKULU, Bengkulu: Illegal miners in the Bengkulu regency of
\nRejang Lebong are damaging the environment and putting their own
\nhealth at risk with the excessive use of mercury, a local
\nofficial said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The head of the local Environmental Impact Management Agency,
\nLumban Sitorus, said miners used mercury to separate valuable
\nminerals like gold from rocks and dirt.<\/p>\n
Illegal miners in the village of Napal Putih in Rejang Lebong
\nare using dangerous levels of mercury, he said.<\/p>\n
He said some of the miners used 40 times the amount of mercury
\nneeded, then dumped the chemical and the waste rocks into a
\nnearby river or just left it lying on the ground.<\/p>\n
The miners also handle the mercury without gloves, and Lumban
\nsaid that over the long term direct contact with mercury could
\ndisrupt blood circulation, damage the nervous system and cause
\ncancer.<\/p>\n
An illegal gold miner in Napal Putih acknowledged that he knew
\nvery little about the dangers of mercury.<\/p>\n
\"We mine like the people before us mined,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said some of his colleagues suffered from different
\nillnesses, but he did not think they were related to the use of
\nmercury.<\/p>\n
Despite the threat illegal mining poses to the environment,
\nthe government has done little to curb the practice.<\/p>\n
Illegal mining has flourished since 1998 when the economic
\ncrisis led people to encroach onto the mining areas of companies.
\nMany of these illegal miners are now believed to be backed by
\nlocal politicians and financed by businesspeople in Jakarta.
