Police now banned from frequenting nightspots<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): National Police Spokesman Brig. Gen. Nurfaizi
\nsaid yesterday that police officers are forbidden to enter
\nprostitution complexes, gambling dens and other similar
\nestablishments, such as nightclubs and massage parlors, without
\nofficial warrants.<\/p>\n
\"They are also not allowed to work at such places,\" Nurfaizi
\ntold The Jakarta Post yesterday.<\/p>\n
According to Nurfaizi, the order has been in force for some
\ntime. He suggested that many police personnel had forgotten about
\nthe order.<\/p>\n
\"Only men from the crime investigation unit and intelligence
\ndivision are allowed to enter these places, with proper written
\nwarrants from their superiors,\" Nurfaizi said.<\/p>\n
National Police Chief Lt. Gen. Dibyo Widodo has instructed all
\nregional police to carry out continuous operations to net police
\nofficers who frequent such places, said Nurfaizi.<\/p>\n
\"We don't want to see any more unscrupulous officers hanging
\naround any of these establishments, as visitors or bodyguards,\"
\nthe spokesman said.<\/p>\n
\"We keep on trying to build a better image of police
\nofficers,\" said Nurfaizi, a former boss of Jakarta detectives.<\/p>\n
\"How can the public have a good impression of the police if
\nsome of them constantly visit such places?\" he queried.<\/p>\n
A few weeks ago, a joint team of police and military officers
\nnetted 13 members of the Armed Forces in a discotheque in West
\nJakarta. Earlier, a police officer was found dead at a
\ndiscotheque, also in West Jakarta, allegedly having overdosed on
\nEcstasy pills.<\/p>\n
The 13 Armed Forces members are undergoing further
\ninterrogation at the Police Military headquarters. They were
\nordered to have urine tests for drug use.<\/p>\n
Military Police Chief Brig. Gen. Syamsu said on Thursday that
\nevery member of the Armed Forces, including the police, are not
\nallowed to enter the so-called prohibited places.<\/p>\n
The rules are in line with an order from the Armed Forces
\ncommander, Syamsu said. \"An offender will be punished under
\nmilitary law,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"Armed Forces members' salaries are low. How do they get money
\nto enter, let's say, a nightclub? They are asked to live
\nmodestly. Visiting nightclubs takes money,\" Syamsu said as quoted
