'Police must prevent attacks on entertainment centers'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Sutiyoso asked the city police on
\nFriday to stop the rampant attacks on entertainment centers
\nduring the fasting month of Ramadhan.<\/p>\n
\"I'm very disappointed with the attacks because when I ordered
\nthe closure of the nightspots during Ramadhan I had considered
\nthe interests of all parties.<\/p>\n
\"The police should have done their jobs and put an end to such
\nattacks,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"All parties should respect each other, especially since I
\nhave considered their (the attacking group's) demand. At least
\nthey should respect my decision,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso reminded that, although the city administration had
\nestablished the tripartite security system, involving officers
\nfrom the police, the military and city public order officials, it
\nwas still the responsibility of the police to arrest those who
\ncommit acts of violence.<\/p>\n
\"The tripartite system cannot handle all security problems, as
\nit's the police who have the authority to capture the criminals
\nand is responsible for maintaining peace and order in the
\ncapital,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The governor did not name specific groups behind the attacks,
\nbut was most likely referring to a series of violent raids
\nconducted by the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) over recent days.<\/p>\n
Following pressure from Muslim groups and six City Council
\nfactions, Governor Sutiyoso announced on Nov. 23 that nightspots
\nmust close during Ramadhan, Idul Fitri and Christmas.<\/p>\n
FPI attacks on nightspots have intensified during Ramadhan
\nfollowing their pledge to burn down establishments which continue
\nto operate during the fasting month.<\/p>\n
The group usually arm themselves with long wooden sticks,
\nswords, daggers and other sharp weapons for the raids.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday FPI raided the MW bar and the Ratu Ayu bar on Jl.
\nTubagus Angke in Wijaya Kusuma subdistrict, West Jakarta, despite
\nthe bars being closed at the time of the attack.<\/p>\n
Earlier on Thursday, Jakarta Police spokesman Supt. Anton
\nBadrul Alam said the police had yet to make any arrests over the
\nattack, but planned to summon the FPI chief for an interview.<\/p>\n
Muslim leaders have condemned the raids on various
\nentertainment centers, saying that the group does not represent
\nthe entire Muslim community, and urge the police to arrest those
\nresponsible.<\/p>\n
Separately, the Jakarta Tourism Agency chief, Parlindungan
\nHutabarat, said many businessmen were afraid to open their
\nbusinesses here because the police could not provide adequate
\nsecurity.<\/p>\n
\"They are scared because of the attack. The police should be
\nresponsible for it.<\/p>\n
\"Do the police understand that the series of attacks will make
\npeople close their businesses in the capital?\" Parlindungan said
