Thirteen months and four days after a bomb exploded on the
\ndriveway of the JW Marriott Hotel in the Mega Kuningan business
\ndistrict, South Jakarta, another bomb rocked the capital in front
\nof the Australian Embassy on Jl. Rasuna Said, also in Kuningan.<\/p>\n
The latest blast killed nine people and injured 182 others,
\nwhile the Marriott bombing took the lives of 12 people and
\nwounded 147.<\/p>\n
Both attacks were similarly horrific and both had similar
\ncasualty figures. But there are other resemblances to these
\nattacks and the much more catastrophic Bali bombing of Oct. 12,
\n2002, which killed 202 people, mostly foreigners.<\/p>\n
A 42-page manual on the reenactment of the Marriott bombing
\nreleased by the police last year shows how mobile the terror
\nsuspects were.<\/p>\n
And police allege that some suspects still at large --
\nparticularly Malaysians Azahari bin Husin and Noordin M. Top --
\nplayed a key role in staging the latest attack.<\/p>\n
Before the Marriott bombing, Azahari and Noordin recruited
\nAsmar Latin Sani, the suicide bomber, and two others, Ismail and
\nTohir, to help prepare the bombs and other equipment used.<\/p>\n
The group moved from one rented house to another to prepare
\ntheir attack and avoid police detection. Houses used as their
\nhideouts included those on Gang Taslim off Jl. Otto Iskandar
\nDinata, East Jakarta; Jl. Mujair, Rawa Bambu, Pasar Minggu; and
\nJl. Kemuning, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
In each attack police were always one crucial step behind
\nfinding the bombers -- this time they found traces of explosives
\nat an empty rented house in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, on Friday.
\nPolice believed the house had been used by the terrorists to
\nstore and rig the bomb.<\/p>\n
In the Bali bombing, the terrorists repeatedly used different
\nmotorcycles to survey safe houses, to select and case locations
\nand to prepare the attack. When the bomb was ready, they bought a
\nminivan to deliver the blast.<\/p>\n
Police say the terrorists often used phone kiosks to
\ncommunicate to avoid any possible police bugging.<\/p>\n
During their preparations for the Bali attack, the suspects
\nalso prepared a hiding place by renting a house on Jl. Cigadung
\nRaya in Bandung.<\/p>\n
Noordin and Tohir did not take part in the bombing, police
\nsay, since they had left for Bandung to carry the rest of
\nexplosives and the luggage of the group members.<\/p>\n
Asmar, the suicide bomber, carried out his final duty -- to
\nblow up the bomb -- while Azahari and Ismail were ready with a
\nremote control unit to detonate the bomb if Asmar failed to
\naccomplish his mission.<\/p>\n
\"It is clear that terrorist suspects are well-organized. Each
\nmember of the group knows their role well ... This kind of
\norganization also led to the recent bombing,\" said Tubagus
\nNitibaskara, a criminologist at the University of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
However, Tubagus warned that with several new recruits ready
\nto die in further suicide bombings, the group could be ready to
\nlaunch another attack with less preparation.<\/p>\n
National Police detective chief Comr. Gen. Suyitno Landung
\nsaid earlier police had received information three new recruits
\nof the group had contacted their families to express their
\npreparedness \"to marry\" -- the same term used by Asmar to refer
\nto the suicide bombing.<\/p>\n
Police now believe the Australian Embassy attack was carried
\nout by two suicide bombers whose body parts were found at the
\nblast site. With at least another suspect still on the loose,
\npolice need all the help from the public they can get to prevent
\nanother attack.<\/p>\n
