Police looking into drug syndicate<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City Police detectives are looking for three
\nNigerians believed to be members of a well-organized Jakarta-
\nBangkok-Hong Kong heroin trafficking syndicate, an official
\nannounced Monday.<\/p>\n
The three were placed on the police's most wanted list
\nfollowing the arrest of four alleged local dealers in raids over
\nthe weekend, Tambora Police subprecinct chief Maj. Chairul Anwar
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"According to the arrested suspects, the three Nigerians
\nstaying in a hotel in Central Jakarta have run their illegal
\nbusiness in this country for about six months," the officer said.<\/p>\n
The police, he said, strongly believed that the Nigerians had
\nbecome major heroin suppliers in several big cities in the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
According to Chairul, the three might have smuggled heroin
\ninto the country through the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport
\nby swallowing the drugs, carefully packed in receptacles such as
\ncondoms.<\/p>\n
The officer refused to further discuss the operation of the
\nthree Nigerians, but said the information from the four alleged
\ndealers was more than enough.<\/p>\n
The four suspected dealers were arrested in two separate raids
\nby Tambora Police on Saturday and Sunday, Chairul said. Two of
\nthem are women.<\/p>\n
Police confiscated from them Rp 7 million, 800 grams of putaw
\n(low-grade heroin) with a street value of about Rp 300 million
\nand several grams of heroin kept in a Malboro cigarette box.<\/p>\n
They have been identified as widow Tina of Jl. Keselamatan in
\nWest Jakarta, married couple Mark and Agnes of Petojo and Apeng
\nof Pekojan, all in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The city has witnessed the arrests and trials of dozens of
\nNigerians for alleged involvement in drug trafficking here over
\nthe past two years.<\/p>\n
The number of Nigerians in the capital has also increased,
\nparticularly in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Staying in cheap hotels, such as those in the Petamburan area,
\nmost Nigerians claim they visit Indonesia to purchase tons of
