Police look into JI-MILF link<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The National Police are investigating a possible
\nconnection between Southeast Asia's Jamaah Islamiyah (JI)
\nterrorist group and the Philippine's Moro Islamic Liberation
\nFront (MILF).<\/p>\n
National Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar announced that the
\ninvestigation was based on a connection between alleged JI
\nmembers and MILF members.<\/p>\n
"Individually, some members (of both groups) are connected.
\nBut we have yet to find the structural connection," he said.<\/p>\n
Earlier this week, the police revealed that Fathurrahman Al-
\nGhozi, an Indonesian currently serving a 12-year prison term for
\nthe illegal possession of explosives in the Philippines,
\nconfessed that he had been involved in the bombing outside the
\nresidence of the Philippine ambassador here in 2000.<\/p>\n
Al-Ghozi allegedly transported the bombs for the MILF rebels,
\nwho are fighting for an independent state.<\/p>\n
Some Bali bomb suspects who are thought to be JI members
\nreportedly trained on Mindanao island, the Philippines, where
\nMILF is based.<\/p>\n
JI is said to be the Southeast Asian wing of the al-Qaeda
\nterrorist network. Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir is
\nallegedly the spiritual leader of JI. Ba'asyir has been in police
\ncustody for five months on treason charges. -- JP<\/p>",
