Police issue another summons to Megawati<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police issued another summons to ousted leader
\nof the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) Megawati Soekarnoputri
\nlast week, ordering her to appear for questioning Thursday.<\/p>\n
This was the second summons for Megawati after she refused to
\nmeet the first summons on Feb. 6, citing legal flaws in the
\ndocuments.<\/p>\n
Megawati and her husband, legislator Taufik Kiemas, are to be
\nquestioned as witnesses in a case the police are building against
\nHaryanto Taslam, a Megawati loyalist, accused of organizing an
\nillegal political meeting at her residence last month.<\/p>\n
Chief of the South Jakarta Police Detectives Capt. Ricko
\nAlmenza said the summonses were sent Wednesday. Although Megawati
\nwill appear Thursday, Taufik's questioning is scheduled for
\ntomorrow. Haryanto is deputy secretary-general on Megawati's
\nboard.<\/p>\n
"He is the only suspect to this moment," Ricko said. He did
\nnot rule out the possibility the number of suspects would
\nincrease during the police investigation.<\/p>\n
Haryanto was chairman of the committee in charge of holding
\nthe "illegal" celebration of the party's 24th anniversary on Jan.
\n10 at Megawati's residence, even as government-backed chairman
\nSoerjadi led an officially-recognized celebration in Sulawesi.
\nMegawati gave a political speech at the gathering.<\/p>\n
Police have said the gathering violated article 6 of law No.
\n5\/ 1963 which stipulates that any political meeting requires a
\npermit from the authority. Violation of the law carries a maximum
\npenalty of one year imprisonment.<\/p>\n
Megawati and Taufik's lawyer RO Tambunan said his clients were
\nyet to receive the police summons up till yesterday afternoon.<\/p>\n
"If the summons are in accordance with the Criminal Code
\nProcedures, Mbak Mega and Mas Taufik will meet the summons," he
\ntold the Post.<\/p>\n
According to the Criminal Code Procedures, summons should be
\nreceived no less than 72 hours before a person is to appear
\nbefore the police.<\/p>\n
In a separate development, a group of Megawati loyalists
\ngathered on Saturday near Wira Sabha meeting hall in Puncak
\nresort area in West Java to protest a leadership meeting of
\nSoerjadi's board, scheduled to open today.<\/p>\n
About 40 of the supporters were reportedly attacked later by
\ndozens of unknown men after because they refused to comply with
\nthe men's order that they disperse. Two of Megawati's supporters
\nwere reportedly injured in the ensuing brawl.<\/p>\n
Head of the Jakarta-branch PDI Roy BB Yanis told the Post by
\nphone yesterday that 10 Megawati supporters were later detained
\nat a police post in the area.<\/p>\n
A Bogor police precinct officer said that there had been no
\nreports of any attack on Saturday nor yesterday.<\/p>\n
Tambunan said his team of lawyers was determined to fight the
\nuse of the 1963 Law in case it was considered outdated because it
\nwas based on the already-revoked Provisional People's
\nConsultative Assembly Decree No. I\/MPRS\/1960.<\/p>\n
"So we believe this case has no weight legally. The legal
\npunishment amounts to almost nothing. It's a case laden with many
\npolitical interests," Tambunan said. (08)<\/p>",
