Police, ILO issue dispute guidelines<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Police officers in the country now have guidelines on
\nhow to approach situations stemming from labor disputes, such as
\nstrikes.<\/p>\n
The National Police and the International Labor Organization
\n(ILO) jointly launched on Tuesday a book of guidelines in a
\nceremony attended by Minister of Manpower and Transmigration
\nFahmi Idris, National Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar, Executive
\nDirector of ILO Kari Tapiola and U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia B.
\nLynn Pascoe.<\/p>\n
Da'i said the guidelines would prevent the police from
\ninterfering in labor disputes as had happened in the past, when
\nthe police became involved in negotiations between labor and
\nindustry executives.<\/p>\n
\"This book essentially ensures the police won't intervene in
\n(dispute) cases. But, it does not mean that they (the police)
\ncan be ignorant about violations of the law,\" he said, explaining
\nthat the police must fully comprehend issues related to labor
\ndisputes.<\/p>\n
The ILO said in a statement that the Ministry of
\nTransmigration and Manpower, labor organizations and business
\nassociations had been consulted during the preparation of the
