Police identify five alleged foreign drug suppliers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City police have established the identities of
\nfive foreigners shot dead during a drug raid at a rented house in
\nSouth Jakarta on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police detectives chief Col. Alex Bambang Riatmodjo
\nidentified the deceased on Thursday as Semeiu Jhola Oladi Pupo
\nand Muueeden Boca Rinwa of Nigeria; Freeman Charles Siafa of
\nLiberia; Ebraheem Mohammed of Togo; and Mouza Sulaiman Domala of
\nthe Ivory Coast.<\/p>\n
The deceased, suspected members of an international drug
\nsyndicate, have been taken to state-run Cipto Mangunkusumo
\nGeneral Hospital for postmortem examinations.<\/p>\n
As of Thursday evening the bodies had not been examined
\nbecause doctors were still awaiting permission to perform the
\npostmortems.<\/p>\n
As part of their operation, police also detained seven
\nIndonesians believed to be local members of the drug syndicate.<\/p>\n
The suspects were identified as Merika Franola, Deni Setya
\nMaharwan, Ranni Andriani, Nelly Fitria Ariani, Rosyati, Lukman
\nHadi Subarkat and Andi Sukandi.<\/p>\n
Merika is reported to be the wife of Mouza Sulaiman Domala.<\/p>\n
Alex said the seven were arrested at Soekarno-Hatta
\nInternational Airport about five hours before the shooting at the
\nhouse on Jl. Cempaka Dua Dalam in Cipete, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Police seized 1.6 kilograms of heroin and four kilograms of
\ncocaine from Merika; six kilograms of cocaine and US$3,000 in
\ncash from Ranni; and five kilograms of cocaine and $3,000 in cash
\nfrom Deni, he said.<\/p>\n
Two of the suspects, Ranni and Deni, were attempting to board
\na plane to London via Hong Kong at the time of their arrest.<\/p>\n
\"Of the seven suspects, four have already admitted to their
\nroles (in the gang),\" Alex said.<\/p>\n
Merika, alias Rika, alias Cunbe Fransiska, ordered where the
\ndrugs were to be delivered by the other suspects, who acted as
\ncouriers for the syndicate, he said.<\/p>\n
Deni, alias Rapi Mohamad Najib, a former subdistrict head in
\nRancagon, Cianjur, West Java, successfully smuggled drugs from
\nThailand and Pakistan into Jakarta five times from April to
\nDecember last year. He also smuggled a shipment of drugs from
\nJakarta to London on Dec. 5, Alex said.<\/p>\n
Ranni, alias Melisa Aprilia, made at least three trips since
\nlast September for the syndicate, carrying drugs from Thailand
\nand Pakistan into Jakarta, Alex said.<\/p>\n
Notorious<\/p>\n
The officer, who led the raid on the house in Cipete, said the
\nfive suspects killed by officers had been wanted by police for
\nthe past three years on suspicion of being the largest suppliers
\nof cocaine and heroin to Jakarta.<\/p>\n
He added that the raid was simply a follow-up to the arrest of
\nthe seven suspects at the international airport.<\/p>\n
The operation at the airport involved at least 60 detectives
\nled by city police detective Lt. Col. Abdullah, who is head of
\nthe narcotics unit.<\/p>\n
Abdullah said he divided his team into 10 groups, each led by
\nhis best captains, with the groups deployed throughout the
\nairport.<\/p>\n
\"I had teams spread out at the arrivals gate, the departures
\ngate, the toilets, immigration, everywhere. Some others were
\nposted along alternative routes out of the airport because we
\nknow that these criminals are damn smart ... They're ghosts,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He said he and his team had been trailing the gang members for
\nsome time, particularly Merika and her husband Mouza Sulaiman.<\/p>\n
During the operation at the airport, Abdullah said police
\nmomentarily lost sight of Merika, Deni and Ranni.<\/p>\n
\"One minute Rika was there, then gone. So were the two
\ncouriers.<\/p>\n
\"Merika just had sunglasses on, no cap or anything to hide her
\nface,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Abdullah said he was amazed when later he saw several
\nimmigration officers approach and begin talking with Merika \"as
\nif she was some kind of queen\".<\/p>\n
The police learned that Deni had already boarded a Cathay
\nPacific flight and Ranni was preparing to board the same flight.<\/p>\n
\"The plane was heading to London via Hong Kong. Nothing was
\ndetected in their baggage, but we knew the drugs were there,\"
\nAbdullah said.<\/p>\n
Passport<\/p>\n
Accompanied by a number of airport officers, Abdullah asked a
\nstewardess on the flight to ask Deni to exit the plane.<\/p>\n
\"Deni got off, thinking that this was about a counterfeit
\npassport. I told him that being Indonesian, he could not travel
\nwith a Malaysian passport. He just nodded and followed me. In a
\nseparate room, I told him about the drugs and he nodded again.\"<\/p>\n
Abdullah said police then quickly arrested Ranni, Merika and
\nthe other four suspects.<\/p>\n
Alex said Merika and her husband, who went by several aliases,
\nincluding Tajudin, Tony and Jemmy, attempted to transport several
\nkilograms of heroin from Indonesia to Pakistan last year using an
\nIndonesian woman as a courier.<\/p>\n
The woman, Elizabeth Ruth Carolina, 26, was arrested at
\nKarachi International Airport, he said.<\/p>\n
\"Once Elizabeth was caught, the couple drove to Nepal and then
\nto New Delhi, where they took a flight back to Indonesia,\" Alex
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
At Jakarta Police Headquarters, Merika spoke to journalists
\nabout her husband: \"He taught me many things. Several times I had
\ngone to Argentina and Brazil as a tourist. I made the right
\ncontacts and learned how to get drugs in and out safely.\"<\/p>\n
She also said she did not regret her actions. \"I'll accept
\nresponsibility for everything I've done.\"<\/p>\n
Also at police headquarters, Deni said he was brought into the
\nbusiness by Merika, who was a distant cousin.<\/p>\n
He said he needed money to repay Rp 50 million he owed to
\nfriends who helped him win the election to become Rancagon
\nsubdistrict head.<\/p>\n
\"Merika immediately lent me Rp 20 million to pay off part of
\nmy debts. I felt indebted to her.<\/p>\n
\"My wife and relatives don't know anything ... I always told
\nthem I had a diamond business abroad,\" Deni said before breaking
