Police hunt killer crocodile<\/p>\n
SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: Police officers and at least four
\nanimal wranglers have been deployed to catch a killer crocodile
\nthat has attacked and killed several villagers in Sangkimah
\nsubdistrict, East Kutai regency.<\/p>\n
The police said at least six residents of Sangkimah had been
\nkilled by crocodiles over the past five years.<\/p>\n
The latest victim was identified as Puang Lewa, whose head was
\ndiscovered on Feb. 20 some 400 meters from his home.<\/p>\n
"We are searching for the crocodile to prevent more deaths. We
\nhave four animal wranglers searching the Sangkimah River,"
\nSangatta Police chief Adj. Comr. Yustan Alpiani said on Monday.<\/p>\n
One of the wranglers, Kaseng, said he thought the killer
\ncrocodile was about seven meters long and attacked its victims at
\nnight.<\/p>\n
"A crocodile is basically afraid of people, but it will attack
\nif surprised," he added.<\/p>\n
The crocodile attacks are believed to be the result of
\ndestruction of mangrove forests near Sangkimah, were the
\ncrocodiles used to live and breed.<\/p>\n
Now the area is home to hectares of fish ponds that have been
\ncultivated by local residents since the 1997 economic crisis.
