Jakarta \u2013 Thousands of police personnel have been mobilised to\noversee a protest by the Executive Board of Universitas Indonesia (BEM\nUI) scheduled for Friday afternoon, 27 February 2026, at the Police\nHeadquarters in South Jakarta, in response to the death of a student\nfrom MTsN 1 Southeast Maluku, Arianto Tawakal (14).<\/p>\n
A total of 3,093 personnel from the Jakarta Metro Police (Polda Metro\nJaya) have been deployed to ensure the demonstration\u2014protesting the\ndeath of Arianto Tawakal and calling for accountability\u2014proceeds\npeacefully. The incident has resulted in Brimob member Bripda Mesias\nSiahaya being named as a suspect and facing disciplinary action.<\/p>\n
Budi Hermanto, Head of Public Relations for Jakarta Metro Police,\nstated that security preparations have been thorough, given the\nstrategic location of the protest site. \u201cSecurity arrangements for the\npublic expression of opinion scheduled for Friday, 27 February 2026, at\napproximately 13:00 after Friday prayers, involving student elements,\nwill see the deployment of approximately 3,093 personnel,\u201d Budi told\njournalists following a personnel briefing.<\/p>\n
He noted that the Police Headquarters vicinity is adjacent to several\nvital national facilities, including the PLN office and centres of\ncommunity activity. Consequently, security measures aim not only to\nmanage the protest but also to ensure normal community operations\ncontinue unimpeded. \u201cWith the involvement of 3,093 personnel, we want\nall public expression activities, including routine community\nactivities, to proceed smoothly,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
Budi emphasised that public protest is a constitutional right\nprotected by law, and police are committed to ensuring students can\nvoice their concerns effectively. \u201cYou have the right to express your\nopinion, and we will guarantee that. We emphasise that the Police\nHeadquarters and Jakarta Metro Police will ensure protection for the\nviews expressed by these students, and this is protected by law. We\nguarantee this,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
However, he urged the protesters to maintain peaceful conduct,\nparticularly given that the Muslim community is currently observing\nRamadan. \u201cWe also wish to call on everyone to ensure that the expression\nof opinion proceeds peacefully, orderly, and without provocation.\nEspecially since this is the holy month of Ramadan, the value of\ntolerance during this sacred month is what we must observe.
