Police gaffe<\/p>\n
Police wrongfully raided two warehouses, containing hundreds
\nof tons of rice on Friday, as part of stepped-up efforts against
\nthe hoarding of rice and kerosene following the government's
\nplanned price increases.<\/p>\n
The first raid took place at a warehouse located on Jl.
\nGresik, Nusantara bonded zone, North Jakarta, that was the
\nsuspected site of 200 tons of hoarded rice.<\/p>\n
A guard at the warehouse, which belonged to PT Indo Grand
\nPerkasa, said that the rice had been imported from Vietnam.
\nHowever, the police believed that the rice came from Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Later in the day, a unit of the detective squad raided another
\nwarehouse, this one containing 2,700 tons of rice belonging to
\nWorld Vision, an international non-governmental organization
\n(NGO).<\/p>\n
The rice sacks, with labels reading \"USA ... not for sale,\"
\nwere apparently intended as humanitarian assistance for poor
\npeople in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The police have recently been intensifying their raids on
\nwarehouses all around Jakarta which are believed to be the
\nlocation for hoarded rice and fuel.<\/p>\n
There has been a dwindling availability of kerosene, and the
\nprice of rice is soaring following the government's plan to
\nincrease fuel prices.<\/p>\n
According to the police, rice hoarding as stipulated in Law
\nNo.5\/1999, is punishable by a maximum of six months in prison,
\nand a fine of Rp 25 billion. --JP<\/p>",
