Police force to get digital tracking unit<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Agency for the Assessment and Application of
\nTechnology has offered the National Police a digital vehicle
\ntracking system to help improve the force's efficiency, the
\nNational Police chief said late last week.<\/p>\n
Lt. Gen. Dibyo Widodo said the high technology Global
\nPositioning System would increase police mobility and efficiency.<\/p>\n
"The digital tracking system would be useful not only to
\nmonitor the location of police mobile units but also to transmit
\nquickly details about the location of incidents," Dibyo said.<\/p>\n
He also said the adoption of such a system would be very
\neffective in coordinating the flow of information between mobile
\nunits and police headquarters.<\/p>\n
"Mobile units provided with such a system could also be used
\nto help the police monitor the May 29 general election," he said
\nfollowing a demonstration at National Police Headquarters
\ninvolving two police cars equipped with the proposed system.<\/p>\n
The head of the agency's Directorate for Technology and
\nNatural Resources Inventory, Indroyono Gunawan, said the Global
\nPositioning System was supported by 24 satellites which would
\nenable all nine police precincts in the Greater Jakarta area to
\nbe covered.<\/p>\n
"The digital system, which provides the exact geographical
\nposition of each mobile unit, will also enable the police to map
\nall areas under its authority," he said.<\/p>\n
Touching on the investment of the project, Indroyono said each
\nGlobal Positioning System monitor cost at least Rp 5 million
