Police extend Tommy's detention<\/p>\n

Police extended on Tuesday Hutomo \"Tommy\" Mandala Putra's
\ndetention for another 40 days, following the expiry of the first
\n20-day detention.<\/p>\n
\"Tommy has signed the document acknowledging the extension of
\nhis detention for 40 days,\" said Tommy's lawyer Elza Syarief.<\/p>\n
Elza said Tommy's detention was extended as police needed more
\ntime to question him.<\/p>\n
According to Article 24 of the Criminal Code Procedures,
\npolice can detain a suspect for 20 days, which can be extended
\nanother 40 days. The first detention expired on Dec. 18 as Tommy
\nwas arrested on Nov. 28.<\/p>\n
The law allows the police to detain a suspect for a total of
\n120 days for interrogation, after which time a suspect must be
\nreleased if no charges are made.<\/p>\n
Elza said Tommy was not interrogated on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Earlier in the day, Tommy visited his ill father, former
\npresident Soeharto, who is undergoing treatment at Pertamina
\nHospital in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Tommy is being investigated in connection with three crimes:
\nthe murder of Supreme Court Justice Syafiuddin Kartasasmita, the
\nillegal possession of arms and masterminding bomb attacks.<\/p>",
