        "content": "<p>Police dismish Brimob commander<\/p>\n<p>Erik W. and La Remmy, The Jakarta Post, Palu, Central Sulawesi<\/p>\n<p>Three days after the deaths of four police recruits at the<br>\nCentral Sulawesi Police paramilitary Mobile Brigade (Brimob)<br>\ntraining academy, authorities fired on Thursday the province's<br>\nBrimob unit commander.<\/p>\n<p>Central Sulawesi Police Chief Brig. Gen. M. Taufik Ridha<br>\nconfirmed that National Police Chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar ordered<br>\nthe dismissal of Adj. Sr. Comr. Hersom Bagus Pribadi in<br>\nconnection with the incident.<\/p>\n<p>During a ceremony on Thursday, Taufik swore in Adj. Sr. Comr.<br>\nAbdi Dharma who previously was assigned in once-restive Poso<br>\nregency as the commander to replace Hersom.<\/p>\n<p>\"The National Police leadership has taken this action to show<br>\nits accountability to the public in connection with the<br>\nincident,\" Taufik said after the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>The four new recruits identified as First Adj. Brig. Yohanis<br>\nTulas, First Adj. Brig. Denny Karya, First Adj. Brig. Sutaji<br>\nTakasihaeng and First Adj. Brig. Sahilu, died soon after<br>\nundertaking a 13-kilometer initiation march conducted by the<br>\nBrimob unit on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>A witness said they were severely beaten during the march.<\/p>\n<p>Da'i has also sent \"a professional ethics team\" consisting<br>\nMobile Brigade Commander Insp. Gen. S.Y. Wenas and  National<br>\nPolice Chief of Profession and Security Insp. Gen. Timbul Silaen<br>\nto look into the case.<\/p>\n<p>Taufik said that a special team assigned to investigate the<br>\ncase had already questioned 10 people, including the instructors<br>\ninvolved in the deadly initiation exercise for 164 new Brimob<br>\nrecruits.<\/p>\n<p>\"A preliminary investigation indicates torture,\" Taufik<br>\nconceded, promising that the police would bring the perpetrators<br>\nto court.<\/p>\n<p>Central Sulawesi Police Medics and Health Chief Adj. Sr. Comr.<br>\nBudi Rahardjo declined to reveal the result of the autopsies<br>\nconducted.<\/p>\n<p>Taufik added that six other new Brimob recruits were also<br>\nrushed to Palu General Hospital with in serious condition after<br>\nthe tortuous march and they were still undergoing intensive<br>\nmedical treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Central Sulawesi councillor Firman Maranua said<br>\nthat the city council was waiting for the results of the<br>\ninvestigation of the case before they would summon Taufik to be<br>\nquestioned.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the council would speak with Taufik if the<br>\ninvestigation revealed violations in formal procedure during the<br>\ninitiation.<\/p>\n<p>\"If the fatalities were caused by torture, Pak Taufik must<br>\nalso be dismissed from his post,\" Firman said.<\/p>",
