Police detective dies in possible suicide<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A police detective died on the way to the
\nhospital after being found in West Jakarta Thursday with a single
\ngun-shot wound to his forehead.<\/p>\n
The detective, Second Sgt. Elvis Sitorus, 24, of the Kali
\nDeres Police Subprecinct, was not on duty when the incident took
\nplace.<\/p>\n
It is unofficially suspected that Elvis committed suicide due
\nto a failed love affair.<\/p>\n
Elvis, a resident of the Bandara Duta Permai housing estate in
\nKosambi, West Jakarta, was the first Jakarta police officer to
\nhave died this year. At least five officers died last year while
\neither on or off duty.<\/p>\n
City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang confirmed Elvis'
\ndeath but strongly denied that police had concluded that it was a
\nsuicide.<\/p>\n
"Some information suggests that Elvis may have intentionally
\nshot himself. But we only have vague information which must be
\nclarified. We're still investigating the case."<\/p>\n
Separately, West Jakarta Police chief Lt. Col. Timur Pradopo
\nhesitantly answered reporters' questions about Elvis' death.<\/p>\n
"So far, our preliminary investigation has indicated that
\nElvis died in an accident. But that's not final. We are still
\ninvestigating the case," Timur said.<\/p>\n
Lukman, one of Elvis' relatives, said that Elvis' body was
\nsent to Medan, North Sumatra, for burial.<\/p>\n
He said the police told the family that Elvis died in an
\naccident, while doctors at Cipto Hospital said Elvis had
\ncommitted suicide.<\/p>\n
He said Elvis had gone out to visit some friends that night
\nand had taken his motorcycle.<\/p>\n
"It's hard to believe. If it was an accident, why did he have
\na bullet wound?" asked Lukman.<\/p>\n
Forensic doctor Mun'im Idries, who examined Elvis' body at
\nCipto Hospital, said that the bullet wound indicated the officer
\nhad apparently committed suicide.<\/p>\n
"It was from a shot at point-blank range and the gun was held
\nwith his right hand," Mun'im said.<\/p>\n
He said an examination of Elvis' right palm further proved his
\nconclusion.<\/p>\n
He also revealed that the victim's blood contained alcohol,
\nbut he declined to reveal the exact level.<\/p>\n
"He was under the influence of alcohol. People who are
\ndepressed and under an unbearable stress are easily provoked,"
\nsaid Mun'im.<\/p>\n
Mun'im said that members of Elvis' family who came to the
\nhospital's morgue mentioned that Elvis' girlfriend may have
\nbecome involved with another man.<\/p>\n
Witnesses told reporters that Elvis was last seen at the house
\nof his unidentified girlfriend on Jl. Peta Barat in Kalideres,
\nWest Jakarta.<\/p>\n
They said the couple had apparently been involved in an
\nargument. Nearby residents heard Elvis yell at his girlfriend,
\n"I'll stay far away from you".<\/p>\n
They also said that a single gun shot was heard inside the
\nhouse a couple of minutes before another shot was heard on the
\nstreet in front of the house.<\/p>\n
Soon after, residents found the dying officer on the street.
