Police detained for fatal beating<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Five members of the South Jakarta police
\nprecinct are currently being detained at the City Police
\nheadquarters, awaiting the results of the investigation of their
\nalleged roles in the fatal beating of a man two months ago.<\/p>\n
"They have been detained there about 56 days and their case
\nhas been taken over by the City Police headquarters," South
\nJakarta police Lt. Col. Sisno Adiwinoto said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The victim, Andi Prabowo, died on May 3 with severe bruises on
\nhis body.<\/p>\n
There are two different versions of the case.<\/p>\n
According to the victim's relatives, when Prabowo was handed
\nover to his relatives by the police he was already in a critical
\ncondition. A relative quoted a witness as saying that Prabowo had
\nsuffered serious injuries after a fight with the officers, who
\nthought that the victim was a street hoodlum.<\/p>\n
On the next day, the officers drove the seriously-injured
\nPrabowo to his sister's home. He died four hours later at the
\nFatmawati hospital.<\/p>\n
The police version says Prabowo had attacked the officers and
\nthen fell, his head hitting the concrete tiles.<\/p>\n
City Police spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna could not be
\nreached for further confirmation yesterday. (bsr)<\/p>",
