Police detain two students for city bus hijacking<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): East Jakarta police detectives on Sunday
\ndetained two of some 50 students, who hijacked a city bus on
\nSaturday and stole passengers' valuables.<\/p>\n
Head of the precinct's detectives unit, Capt. Agus Irianto,
\nsaid that the two students -- Muhammad Husni Hidayat and Nikolas
\nbin Nizar -- were found to be illegally carrying sharp weapons,
\nnamely a sickle and a samurai sword.<\/p>\n
\"Both of them could be charged on the basis of Article 2 of
\nthe Emergency Law,\" Agus said.<\/p>\n
The law stipulates that those found guilty in the court face a
\nmaximum penalty of 10 years in prison.<\/p>\n
Husni and Nikolas along with dozens of their fellow students
\nfrom a senior technical school in Lapangan Banteng area, central
\nJakarta, hijacked city bus P02 plying the Kampung Rambutan - Kota
\nroute on Saturday afternoon, shortly after the announcement of
\nthe final examination results for last grade students.<\/p>\n
\"Actually, many of the students were carrying sharp weapons.
\nBut we could not arrest them due to a lack of evidence, since
\nthey managed to immediately throw away their weapons before our
\nmen could detain them,\" officer Agus said.<\/p>\n
Therefore, the police could only detain two of the students
\nand released the others to their parents.<\/p>\n
The incident started when 10 senior students came to their
\nschool to see whether or not they passed the national
\nexamination. Students nationwide actually no longer need to visit
\ntheir schools to receive the test results because their schools
\nusually mail the results to each of the students.<\/p>\n
Knowing that they passed the exam, the 10 students then
\ntempted their juniors to join them for an unclear mission.<\/p>\n
On Jl. Gunung Sahari, the crowd of some 50 students then
\nstopped the P2 bus and jumped onboard.<\/p>\n
\"Some of them sat on the seats, while others hung from the
\ndoors,\" a passenger recalled.<\/p>\n
Few seconds later, the teenagers then shouted, pointed out
\ntheir sharp weapons, ranging from samurai swords to cutters, and
\nthen grabbed the passengers' belongings one by one.<\/p>\n
Passenger M. Zein, who had just bought a brand new PlayStation
\nfor his children, tried to defend his goods but was forced by the
\nstudents to hand it over to them.<\/p>\n
\"Shut up, or die!\" one of the students was quoted by Zein as
\nsaying.<\/p>\n
Suspicious about the crowd of students inside the bus, Central
\nJakarta police officers attempted to stop the bus as it passed in
\nfront of their headquarters on Jl. Kramat Raya.<\/p>\n
Since they were being threatened by the young hijackers, bus
\ndriver Sudarmo, 43, and assistant Edi Purwanto, 30, refused to
\nmeet the officers' call and sped past, heading south.<\/p>\n
Upset, the officers then contacted their counterparts in the
\nEast Jakarta police precinct, which then placed two trucks on Jl.
\nMatraman Raya to blockade the hijacked bus.<\/p>\n
According to deputy head of the detectives unit, First Lt.
\nFerdy Sambo, the students abruptly threw their weapons onto the
\nstreet shortly after the bus was surrounded by police officers.<\/p>\n
No passengers were wounded.<\/p>\n
Few days earlier, police rounded up 48 students from SMK PGRI
\n26 senior high school who were loitering in the Jembatan Tinggi
\narea in West Jakarta in a measure to prevent them from brawling
\nwith students from other schools.<\/p>\n
Their suspicions were somewhat confirmed when they discovered
\nthree sickles and four wooden sticks, weapons commonly used in
\ninterschool brawls in the capital, being carried by the group.<\/p>\n
The police also seized marijuana from a student and low grade
\nheroin from another.<\/p>\n
The students were taken to the Jakarta Police Headquarters
\nwhere they were subjected to physical exercise before being
\nreleased.<\/p>\n
The two students carrying drugs were held for further
