Police detain 24 more people for infringing campaign rules<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police took 24 more people for questioning
\nyesterday over campaign-rule infringements, taking the number
\nunder interrogation to 46.<\/p>\n
Twenty-four supporters of the Indonesian Democratic Party
\n(PDI) were caught handing out roses to people on the streets of
\nSouth Jakarta in a "sympathetic campaign".<\/p>\n
A police source said rose distribution did not break the law.<\/p>\n
"But if distributing flowers causes traffic problems, then it
\nshould be stopped," the officer said.<\/p>\n
The other 22 detainees, who were arrested earlier this week,
\nwere supporters of either the PDI, the United Development Party
\nor Golkar.<\/p>\n
The City Police Special Deployment Force's chief, Col. Arthur
\nDamanik, said Wednesday the 22 had violated article 362 of the
\nCriminal Code.<\/p>\n
"They were charged with stealing property," Arthur said.<\/p>\n
He said the 22 had allegedly destroyed or stolen signs, or
\nbanners of the parties contesting the May 29 election.<\/p>\n
Police have received many complaints of signs and banners
\nbeing destroyed, the source said. Police have also recorded
\nseveral violations of campaign rules, especially regarding
\nmotorcades causing traffic jams.<\/p>\n
Ridwan, a third-year East Jakarta high school student, died
\nWednesday afternoon after falling off a truck in a Golkar rally.
