South Sumatra Police Chief, Inspector General Sandi Nugroho,\nstated the hundreds of illegal firearms comprised 284 long-barrelled\nweapons and 113 short-barrelled weapons. He said 31 suspects involved in\nthe misuse of illegal firearms were also arrested. \u201cThe results of this\noperation are quite significant, both for long-barrelled and\nshort-barrelled weapons. This signifies that the state is present to\nsecure the public in matters relating to firearms,\u201d he said in a written\nstatement on Friday (3\/7). Sandi explained the operation was conducted\nto eliminate public fear regarding the prevalence of criminals using\nfirearms. He said this allows the public to carry out activities, work,\nworship, and attend school safely without fear due to the large number\nof firearms in circulation. \u201cThe South Sumatra Regional Police ensures\nthat this responsibility for maintaining security and order is a\nrepresentation of the state\u2019s presence in the community,\u201d he said.\nFurthermore, Sandi stated that of the hundreds of firearms destroyed,\n234 illegal weapons were voluntarily surrendered by members of the\npublic.
