Police deny Tommy's 'arrest'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Saleh Saaf
\ndenied on Saturday that police had ever arrested fugitive Hutomo
\n\"Tommy\" Mandala Putra, the youngest son of former president
\nSoeharto, as claimed by President Abdurrahman Wahid on Friday.<\/p>\n
\"The National Police Headquarters officially denies that,\"
\nSaleh said in a telephone interview.<\/p>\n
\"Don't say that the National Police spokesman is saying that
\nthe President is wrong. But, no single policeman has ever
\narrested Tommy.\"<\/p>\n
The President said that Tommy slipped through the fingers of
\nlaw enforcers in a small East Java town two weeks ago.<\/p>\n
Speaking after Friday prayers in Ciganjur, South Jakarta,
\nAbdurrahman claimed that Tommy, after being caught, demanded to
\nmeet the President and indicated he had incriminating information
\non tape, prompting the nervous policeman to telephone the
\nPresident. Abdurrahman said Tommy then made his escape through a
\nwindow.<\/p>\n
East Java Police have denied the report, while the head of the
\nSouth Jakarta Prosecutor's Office Antasari Azhar said on Friday
\nthat his office knew nothing of the incident. (ylt)<\/p>",
