Police defend shooting officer<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Police Headquarters defended the
\nrecent shooting of one of their off-duty officers, who had
\nextorted money from public transport drivers in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Spokesman Brig. Gen. Nurfaizi said at a press meeting at the
\nCilangkap headquarters yesterday, that the man had resisted
\narrest when caught extorting money from drivers in Pondok Kopi on
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
Armed Forces Spokesman Brig. Gen. Slamet Supriyadi attended
\nthe meeting.<\/p>\n
\"He did not have a single ID card showing he was a policeman.
\nHe was wearing his uniform under a black jacket,\" Nurfaizi said.<\/p>\n
The officers had gone to follow up reports from local drivers
\nthat an unidentified man was extorting money from them everyday.<\/p>\n
City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata had earlier said that
\nthe victim was shot while impersonating a police officer.<\/p>\n
Nurfaizi said \"When the officers arrived, the man was asking
\nthe drivers for money. He attacked the officers and ignored
\nwarning shots before they shot him.\"<\/p>\n
He said the officers involved in the shooting were now being
\nquestioned.<\/p>\n
He said an officer should set a good example. \"The victim was
\na bad policeman. Anyone can become bad. A policeman is a human
\nwho makes a mistake. That's that.\"<\/p>\n
Nurfaizi said it was the duty of police to protect people from
\nany crime. \"We are determined to get tough against trouble
\nmakers, whoever they are.\"<\/p>\n
The victim, 2nd Sergeant Sofjan Sani of the North Jakarta
\nPolice Precinct, was buried at Kober public cemetery Wednesday.
\nDeputy Chief of the North Jakarta Police Precinct Maj. Bachtiar
\nTambunan attended the funeral. That was when police became aware
\nthat Sofjan was a real policeman.<\/p>\n
The neighbors were surprised that Sofjan, a police officer,
