Police confiscate illegal medicines<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City police have confiscated hundreds of boxes
\nof unregistered Chinese medicine and food supplements in raids on
\n18 drug stores in West Jakarta, a police officer said Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Chief of Detectives for Economic Affairs Lt. Col. Saud Usman
\nNasution said Wednesday that unregistered medicine had been
\nconfiscated from 16 of the 18 stores.<\/p>\n
City Police Spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said the seized
\nproducts, including various Chinese brands of slimming tea and
\npain killers, were packed in glass or plastic bottles or aluminum
\nstrips or cans.<\/p>\n
There were no details on the prices of the seized medicine and
\nfood supplements, Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
Saud said the owners of the 16 stores had been questioned over
\nwhy they had not registered the imported medicine at the Ministry
\nof Health.<\/p>\n
\"These people have violated Article 23 of the 1992 Health
\nRegulations on product registration and labeling,\" Saud said.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said that all food and beverages, including
\nmedicine and food supplements, sold domestically should have
\ningredients and expiry dates listed on the packaging.<\/p>\n
He said police in cooperation with the Agency for Food and
\nDrug Control would examine the ingredients and quality of the
\nconfiscated drugs.<\/p>\n
Twelve of the 16 stores raided are on Jl. Pancoran, Kota. They
\ninclude the Mandarin, Sinar Makmur, Bintang Selatan, Tai Seng Ho,
\nHauw Hauw, Brother, Hidup, Jaya Abadi, Berlian Baru, Berlian
\nLama, and Bintang Terang.<\/p>\n
The other stores are the Bison and Karti Jaya on Jl.
\nKemenangan and Bintang Surya and Sudi in Bandengan. (cst)<\/p>",
