Police concerned about protests<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): National Police chief Gen. Dibyo Widodo
\nexpressed concern over the number of protests breaking out in
\nmany cities as an actualization of the demand for reform.<\/p>\n
It is feared that the protests, which have been accompanied by
\nburning and destruction, will affect security, he said in his
\nfinal lecture to cadets of the Police Academy in South Jakarta on
\nMonday night.<\/p>\n
Dibyo said that since the police would continue to support
\nconceptual, gradual, sustainable and constitutional reform, the
\nforce would keep an eye on whether the reform movement stayed on
\ntrack.<\/p>\n
\"The police support reform and will continue to uphold unity,
\nthe Pancasila state ideology and the 1945 Constitution,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He acknowledged that recent incidents in Medan, Jakarta and
\nSurakarta had caused problems between the police, in their
\ncapacity as security officers, and members of the public.<\/p>\n
He viewed the problems as serious challenges, and said that
\nnonetheless the police were expected to uphold the law.<\/p>\n
\"So, the police are urged to be able to make anticipative
\nsteps accurately. They should also be fast and correct,\" Dibyo
