Police close to arrest Glodok stores' thieves<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): West Jakarta police are close to arresting the
\nbandits who robbed three shops and made off with Rp 66.6 million
\n(US$30,000) in the Glodok business center, downtown Kota, last
\nmonth.<\/p>\n
The police said they already had the names of all seven
\nsuspects and know their whereabouts.<\/p>\n
\"Some of the group are repeat offenders,\" chief of the West
\nJakarta police precinct, Lt. Col. Made Mangku Pastika, told the
\nJakarta Post last week.<\/p>\n
According to Made, most of the suspected thieves are currently
\nhiding \"somewhere\" in East Java.<\/p>\n
\"My agents are still monitoring their movements and we hope
\nthat this operation can be carried out as expected,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the gangsters
\ndug an underground tunnel about seven meters in length from Jl.
\nMangga Besar I to get into the first machine equipment store, PT
\nBukit Baja, which they robbed during the early hours of June 17.<\/p>\n
Officers of the Taman Sari police sub-precinct have been
\nquoted as saying that the group then extended their operation to
\nthe adjacent stores by climbing through the ceiling.<\/p>\n
Police found a hole with a diameter of 1.5 meters in the floor
\nof PT Bukit Baja, two crowbars, a pair of sandals, empty packets
\nof instant noodles and two glasses at the three scenes of crimes.<\/p>\n
Owner of PT Bukit Baja claimed that he had suffered a loss
\ncash and property amounting to Rp 5.6 million in the robbery,
\nincluding a 14-inch television set, a video cassette recorder set
\nand cash.<\/p>\n
\"Fortunately, the group didn't open another safe in my working
\nroom which had Rp 100 million cash in it,\" said Hargo, 35, the
\nowner.<\/p>\n
PT Perintis Logam claimed a loss of Rp 400,000 in cash while
\nPT Sumber Makmur claimed a loss of Rp 60.5 million, also cash.<\/p>\n
The owners said that the money was kept in safes.<\/p>\n
\"We'll do our best to nab all the suspects and seek enough
\nevidence to bring them to court as soon as possible,\" Made said.
