Police chief warned over rare animals<\/p>\n

The Animal Advocacy Institution (LASA) sent a warning letter on
\nThursday to Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani over the
\npresence of caged endangered animals on police grounds.<\/p>\n
\"These mini zoos are in the compound of the driver's license
\nadministrative office on Jl. Daan Mogot in West Jakarta, and at
\nthe police's Language School in Pisangan Baru Raya, East
\nJakarta,\" said LASA executive director Wahyu Kuncoro.<\/p>\n
In response to the letter, the head of the police's
\nenvironmental division, Adj. Sr. Comr. Ahmad Haydar, said the
\npolice would move the animals to the Taman Safari animal park in
\nBogor on Friday.<\/p>\n
\"We are not violating any laws. Keeping protected animals for
\npersonal use is a violation ... but all of these animals were
\ngiven to us by citizens and were put on display in public places
\nfor the general public to enjoy,\" he told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
In its letter, the Animal Advocacy Institution warned that it
\nwould file a lawsuit with the Central Jakarta District Court
\nunless the police handed over the animals to an appropriate
\ngovernment organization within 14 days.<\/p>\n
The LASA said the site on Jl. Daan Mogot contained two
\ncassowaries, nine deer, more than 10 Papuan kangaroos, two
\ncrocodiles, a bear and various protected birds.<\/p>\n
At the police language school, the LASA found three peacocks.<\/p>\n
Wahyu accused the police of violating Law No. 5\/1990 on
\nnatural resources and conservation.<\/p>\n
\"The police should set an example for the people by obeying
\nthe law,\" he remarked.<\/p>",
