Police called on to stick to ethics<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A former National Police Chief called yesterday
\non police officers to stick to police ethics in their work.<\/p>\n
Gen. (ret) Kunarto said ethical behavior improved the
\nprofessionalism of the police and encouraged people to trust the
\npolice more.<\/p>\n
\"People will be proud to have ethical police,\" he said after
\nthe launching of three of his books on police issues.<\/p>\n
Kunarto's books are Etika Polisi (Police Ethics), Tribrata &
\nCatur Prasetya (Police Pledges) and Tren Kejahatan dan Peradilan
\nPidana (Crime Trends and Criminal Justice).<\/p>\n
The launching was at the Police Science Institute's auditorium
\non Jl. Tirtayasa in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Criminologist Adrianus E. Meliala, who spoke at the launch,
\nsaid \"ethics are not really the problem\". The main problem was
\nrelated to the conditions of police work and low wages in
\nparticular, he said.<\/p>\n
Another speaker, father Franz Magnis-Suseno, criticized police
\nover their frequent use of violence in solving cases.<\/p>\n
He cited the cases of Yogyakarta-based reporter Fuad M.
\nSayafrudin, the Tasikmalaya riot, and the death of prisoner
\nTjetje Tadjudin in Bogor. (jun)<\/p>",
