Police call in top economist<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta Police summoned noted economist
\nSjahrir on Monday for questioning as a witness to the massive
\nstudent rally in front of the People's Consultative Assembly
\n(MPR) building on Nov. 14.<\/p>\n
Although there was no clear explanation from the police about
\nthe questioning, city police chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman
\ntold the media Sjahrir \"attended the gathering and even gave a
\nspeech in front of the building's gate.<\/p>\n
\"So he must have known something behind the illegal
\ngathering.\"<\/p>\n
He insisted the questioning of Sjahrir was \"part of the
\nongoing police investigation to uphold the newly issued
\nregulation No. 9\/1998 on the Freedom of Expression Law\".<\/p>\n
Under the hotly contested law, public protests are allowed
\nonly in the event of advance notification of the police.<\/p>\n
\"Those students did not report to the police, either through
\nthe Tanah Abang police subprecinct or city police. That is
\nalready a violation of the bill,\" Noegroho said.<\/p>\n
Sjahrir was questioned for about four hours.<\/p>\n
During the rally students had demanded the resignation of
\nMinister of Defense and Security\/Armed Forces Commander Gen.
\nWiranto for the shooting deaths of students and civilians near
\nAtmajaya University the previous day.<\/p>\n
Politician Sri Bintang Pamungkas also attended the rally and
