Police beat student protesters<\/p>\n
MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara: Police personnel beat a number of
\nstudent protesters for disrupting on Tuesday a plenary meeting of
\nthe provincial legislature.<\/p>\n
Lombok Barat Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Dani Wiswa Wardana
\nsaid security troops used violence just to discipline the
\nstudents. No arrest was made after police dispersed the rally
\nheld to protest the proposed provincial budget.<\/p>\n
\"We just try to maintain order and allow the meeting to take
\nplace without any disturbances,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Initially, about 60 students and activists of non-governmental
\norganizations attended the plenary meeting, which was open to the
\npublic. After a five-minute break, however, they began to disrupt
\nthe meeting by voicing their rejections of the proposed budget.
\nSome took out posters from their bags which read, \"Reject the
\n2003 provincial budget\".<\/p>\n
The councillors gave the students some time to express their
\nconcerns, but at the end of the meeting, the students resumed
\ntheir boisterous protest against the budget.<\/p>\n
Police then rushed into the plenary hall and dragged some of
\nthe students out of the room and started beating them. --Antara<\/p>",
