Police assigned to schools<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police officers will soon be assigned to monitor
\nactivities at every high school in South Jakarta in an effort to
\nprevent students from brawling.<\/p>\n
\"If it is agreed, we will place one or two officers at the
\nschools to supervise,\" South Jakarta Police Chief Lt. Col. Sisno
\nAdhi informed principals at a special meeting on curbing student
\nbrawls yesterday.<\/p>\n
Fifty South Jakarta high school principals attended the
\nmeeting.<\/p>\n
Sisno said the officers will teach students how to secure and
\nmaintain their school environment. \"Its not just to prevent
\nstudent brawls,\" he added.<\/p>\n
He suggested that principals and teachers regularly check to
\nsee if their students are bringing weapons or drugs to school.<\/p>\n
One high school principal said that he had done what the
\npolice suggested, but it did not work.<\/p>\n
\"We keep our eyes on our students until they get aboard buses.
\nBut we don't have enough buses for all of the students,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Another high school principal suggested that ethics and other
\nmoral teachings be added to the lessons taught at the schools.<\/p>\n
\"I have ordered our teachers to teach morality for five
\nminutes each time they start a class,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Sisno said yesterday that the South Jakarta police have
\napprehended 150 students in a two-day operation.<\/p>\n
The police have seized three machetes, two swords and 15 belts
\nwhich have cogwheels in the place of buckles.<\/p>\n
\"We also apprehended three hoodlums wearing high school
\nuniforms,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The students were released after they signed statements saying
\nthey would no longer involve themselves in brawls.(04)<\/p>",
