Police ask House to send letter about Suwondo case<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): National Police Chief Gen. Surojo Bimantoro said
\nthe House of Representative's special committee for the Bulog
\nscandal could send an official letter to police requesting that
\nSuwondo, a main suspect in the multibillion rupiah scam, be
\nbrought for questioning.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters after installing Brig. Gen. Mulyono
\nSulaiman as the new Jakarta Police chief on Saturday, Bimantoro
\nsaid that the letter would not be an automatic guarantee that
\npolice would allow Suwondo, who is currently under police
\ndetention, to go to the House for questioning over the case.<\/p>\n
According to the police boss, he was not sure whether the
\nexisting laws allowed police to bring crime suspects to the House
\nfor questioning.<\/p>\n
\"Please send a request letter to us and then we will look into
\nthe regulation. Let's see... if the law allows it, then he
\n(Suwondo) can give his explanation to the special committee,\"
\nBimantoro said.<\/p>\n
\"But if there are some differences of opinion, then we may
\nhave to wait for the decision from the Supreme Court. If the law
\ngives us authorization, we do not mind,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Alip Agung Suwondo, alias An Peng Sui, also known as President
\nAbdurrahman Wahid's former masseur, has been named as a main
\nsuspect in the Rp 35 billion (US$3.9 million) scam allegedly
\ndisbursed from the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) employee
\nfoundation, Yanatera.<\/p>\n
He was arrested by the police last week, but due to his ill
\nmental and physical condition the police have yet to question him
\nthoroughly.<\/p>\n
Another suspect in the scandal, former Bulog deputy chief
\nSapuan, has already been tried at the South Jakarta District
\nCourt for his suspected role in disbursing the money to Suwondo,
\nwho he claims acted on behalf of the President.<\/p>\n
Bimantoro said five members of the House's special committee,
\nincluding legislators Didiek Suprianto of the PDI Perjuangan
\nfaction and Alvin Lie of the Reform Party faction, had appealed
\nto him requesting that Suwondo be grilled by the committee.<\/p>\n
He further emphasized that the police will not hamper the
\ninvestigation by the House as long as the regulations allow them
\nto submit Suwondo for questioning by the special
