'Police arrests human rights'<\/p>\n
A number of persons have reportedly disappeared or been forcibly
\ntaken into custody by the police due to their alleged terrorist
\nlinks. Rights groups have lambasted the police moves as
\nviolations of basic human rights. The Jakarta Post asked some
\nresidents about the latest police response to the terrorist
\nthreat.<\/p>\n
Hasan, 35, is the father of five children and works as a
\nnewspaper vendor in Grogol, West Jakarta. He resides in
\nPejompongan, Central Jakarta:<\/p>\n
I'm sure that the police will never accept the blame for their
\ninappropriate actions, including the recent arrests of alleged
\nterrorist suspects.<\/p>\n
I think the arrest of these people by the police here is, in a
\nway, against human rights. They are not necessarily terrorists as
\nthe police have assumed.<\/p>\n
I keep on wondering how the police can so easily arrest people
\nwithout clear evidence of their guilt.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, the police let prominent corruption
\nsuspects off even if there is crystal clear evidence of their
\nwrongdoing.<\/p>\n
I guess it was far better under the New Order regime when the
\nsecurity forces could work out these sort of cases without the
\npublic noticing them. It was safe and everything was under
\ncontrol.<\/p>\n
Tofik, 25, is a street hawker selling tissues on public
\ntransportation vehicles. He lives in Kalimalang, East Jakarta,
\nwith his wife and daughter:<\/p>\n
I think the arrests by police of several people suspected of
\nhaving links with terrorists is going too far.<\/p>\n
It could even be considered as being against human rights as
\nI'm sure the police don't yet have hard evidence to back up their
\nallegations.<\/p>\n
I cannot imagine what will happen to the families of the
\narrested people. Assuming that these people were the breadwinners
\nfor their families, I don't think the security forces here will
\naccept any responsibility for the upkeep of their dependents.<\/p>\n
The arrests would be acceptable if police intelligence had
\nclear evidence regarding the involvement of these people in
\nterrorism.<\/p>\n
Engkus, 30, is a sidewalk vendor selling mineral water in
\nPetamburan, Central Jakarta. He lives nearby with his wife and
\nthree children:<\/p>\n
From the point of view of low income people, I think the
\nbrutal arrests of people for their alleged involvement in
\nterrorism by the police is not acceptable.<\/p>\n
Honestly, I disagree with these arrests. It was so strange to
\nsee that their families were only given the arrest warrants after
\ntheir loved ones had been seized.<\/p>\n
Police intelligence should have thoroughly investigated and
\nmonitored the suspects, including questioning people in their
\nneighborhoods, before arresting them.<\/p>\n
I'm sure that police detectives and intelligence agents are
\nhighly educated and well-trained people. I hope the police are
\nnot just out to put on a show of force in this case.<\/p>\n
