Police arrest suspects in phoney 'revolution'<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police arrested on Wednesday two people suspected of
\norganizing a rally to supposedly declare a revolution at the
\nPeople's Consultative Assembly compound on Jl. Gatot Subroto on
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
Chief Insp. Gen. Makbul Padmanagara was quoted by Antara as
\nsaying that his men had taken into custody two men, who he
\nreferred to only as T and S.<\/p>\n
National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Paiman, who accompanied
\nMakbul, said the police had detained two other suspects in
\nIndramayu, West Java, -- T and CF -- in the same case.<\/p>\n
The mastermind of the case, however, is still being pursued.<\/p>\n
Makbul further said the whole incident had been a hoax.<\/p>\n
\"We urge the public not to believe what they read in such
\npamphlets, especially if a sum of money is promised,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of people gathered outside the compound after
\nreceiving pamphlets dated May 10 signed by \"retired marine Berti
\nLiwoso\". The pamphlets promised to pay each person Rp 10 million
\n(US$ 1,081) for attending a declaration of the \"Revolution to
\nBenefit the People\" on June 1. The money is said to come from
\nfounding president Sukarno's \"revolution fund\".<\/p>\n
Besides people from the capital, others traveled from Karawang
\nand Cilacap in West Java, Tegal, Purwokerto and Surakarta in
\nCentral Java and Madiun in East Java. Some came as far away as
\nRiau, Kalimantan and West Nusa Tenggara.<\/p>\n
Several people realized they had been duped but said they had
\nno money to return home. Jakarta Police provided 12 buses to help
\nsome 800 of them return home. --JP<\/p>",
