Police arrest firecracker vendor<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, seized
\n5,000 firecrackers and arrested a 30-year-old woman, allegedly in
\npossession of the illegal goods, over the weekend.<\/p>\n
The woman, a mother of two, claimed that the firecrackers
\nbelonged to her neighbor, according to Major Martono, head of the
\nTanah Abang police sub-precinct. The confiscation and arrest took
\nplace at a traditional market place.<\/p>\n
The use or possession of firecrackers is banned in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
According to Martono, the woman admitted under questioning
\nthat she had been selling the firecrackers in order to make ends
\nmeet. The suspect was identified only as \"ST\".<\/p>\n
Martono said the woman had claimed that she needed money to
\npay her children's school fees.<\/p>\n
ST was released after signing a declaration that she would
\nnever again engage in such activities, Martono said.<\/p>\n
The number of street vendors selling firecrackers in and
\naround the city normally increases in the lead-up to the Moslem
\npost-fasting holiday of Idul Fitri (Lebaran). Next year the
