Police arrest dozens carrying explosives<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police detectives aided by local people arrested
\n53 people in two separate raids on Thursday for possession of
\nMolotov cocktails and other explosives.<\/p>\n
In the morning, 35 people were arrested by detectives from the
\nSouth Jakarta precinct at the Perbanas School of Economics on Jl.
\nGenteng Hijau.<\/p>\n
The officers confiscated at least 35 Molotov cocktails and 15
\nplastic and glass bottles filled with fuel and equipped with
\nwicks.<\/p>\n
Later in the evening, a group of people on the capital's major
\nthoroughfare of Jl. Sudirman in South Jakarta detained 18 men,
\nwho claimed they were members of the Indonesian Democratic Party
\nof Struggle (PDI Perjuangan).<\/p>\n
They were handcuffed after being chased by people in the area
\nwho were suspicious of their appearance.<\/p>\n
The people captured the 18 suspects and later handed them over
\nto the nearby Jakarta Police headquarters, together with the
\nMolotov cocktails.<\/p>\n
The suspects were taken to the South Jakarta police for
\nfurther questioning.<\/p>\n
South Jakarta police chief of detectives Capt. Rycko Amelza
\nDaniel explained the first arrests were made at Perbanas campus
\nfollowing an operation against suspected militant activists which
\nlasted over 30 minutes.<\/p>\n
\"Police came out with bombs and plastic bottles in their
\nhands,\" Rycko said.<\/p>\n
\"According to information from our informers, students from
\nPadjajaran University in Bandung had been arriving since
\nWednesday and had joined with the Perbanas students. Some of them
\nhad even managed to kidnap one of our officers.\"<\/p>\n
\"The kidnapped officer was 2nd Sgt. Nugroho. He was later
\nsafely handed over to the military police for questioning about
\nthe matter.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Bandung students were sent back to Bandung at
\nabout 11:30 a.m.,\" Rycko said.<\/p>\n
The 35 arrested people were believed to have been involved in
\nthe kidnapping as well as in the making of the handmade bombs.
