Police arrest detested, evil miscreants<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP) The Central Jakarta police have arrested six
\nmembers of the most notorious burglary ring in the city, whose
\nsignature method of theft involved burrowing, rat-like, into the
\nheart of their targeted buildings.<\/p>\n
Maj. Charles Marpaung, head of the Central Jakarta crime
\ninvestigation unit, told reporters yesterday that the
\nsubterranean recidivists, sought for nearly two-years, were
\narrested early this week.<\/p>\n
\"We nabbed them at a slum in Teluk Gong in North Jakarta where
\nthe group lived and disguised as poor people, whereas they have
\nhundreds of million rupiahs on their hands due to the success of
\ntheir many operations,\" he said.<\/p>\n
During the raid, the police team arrested Kasbi, 38, the
\nhardened ex-con who led the gang.<\/p>\n
Along with Kasbi, Yanto, Joni, Ridwan, Cholik and Buntaro were
\narrested.<\/p>\n
\"Three others are still at large, but their identities are
\nalready in our hands,\" Charles said.<\/p>\n
On the groups grime besmeared hands was the burglary of the
\nMelawai optical center and a camera shop at the Blok M shopping
\ncenter in South Jakarta. Their take included 400 pairs of glasses
\nworth around Rp 160 million (US$74,400) and 19 cameras, worth
\nover Rp 20 million ($9,300).<\/p>\n
In West Jakarta, the group pilfered a safe containing Rp 50
\nmillion ($23,250) in cash from an affluent tailor.<\/p>\n
In Central Jakarta, police have investigated at least two
\nburglaries believed to have been committed by the group,
\nincluding a theft at a stationery store which caused a loss
\ntotaling Rp 25 million ($11,630).<\/p>\n
\"The arrest of the group was based on our investigation of
\ntheir latest theft,\" Charles said. (bsr)<\/p>",
