Police announce new identity of mutilated body<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Based on a detailed description given by family
\nmembers, city police on Wednesday identified a mutilated body
\ndiscovered earlier this week as Sumarsana, 33, an employee of
\nplastic household manufacturer PT Lion Star in Cengkareng, West
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
The motive for the murder and mutilation remains unknown due
\nto a lack of leads, according to the police.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman said his
\noffice had made the preliminary identification based on physical
\ndetails provided by Sumarsana's relatives.<\/p>\n
\"But we don't want to speculate about the case. If family
\nmembers can prove that they see marks on the mutilated body which
\nare identical to marks on their relative's body, we'll build the
\ncase so we can go after the murderer as soon as possible,\"
\nNoegroho announced.<\/p>\n
Police originally believed the mutilated body was a man
\nidentified as Sugantio, a food vendor and resident of Tanjung
\nPriok in North Jakarta. However, upon hearing the reports on
\nWednesday, Sugantio returned to his home and let relatives know
\nthat he was still alive.<\/p>\n
\"We checked Sugantio's house. He's alive,\" Jakarta Police
\ndetective chief Col. Alex Bambang Riatmodjo said.<\/p>\n
The head of Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital's forensics
\ndepartment, Budi Sampurna, said, if necessary, he and his staff
\ncould carry out a DNA test to positively identify the body as
\nSumarsana.<\/p>\n
According to Budi, if any of Sumarsana's relatives had a
\nsample of his fingerprints, it would provide authorities the
\nquickest way to establish the identity of the victim.<\/p>\n
Police did not disclose whether they already had a sample of
\nSumarsana's fingerprints they could match with fingerprints
\nobtained from the corpse.<\/p>\n
However, Hartini, one of Samarsana's two sisters living in
\nJakarta, said her brother's fingerprints matched those of the
\ncorpse.<\/p>\n
Decent person<\/p>\n
Hartini and Sri Yanti, Sumarsana's other sister, are convinced
\nthe corpse is that of their missing brother, the fourth of six
\nchildren. The siblings parents currently reside in Klaten,
\nCentral Java.<\/p>\n
The sisters displayed a photo of Sumarsana, which matched the
\nface of the corpse.<\/p>\n
\"Sumarsana was known to his family and friends as a kind and
\ndecent person,\" Hartini said.<\/p>\n
She said Sumarsana left Klaten for Jakarta in 1985 and
\ngraduated from the Institute of Teachers Training and Education
\nSciences (IKIP) several years later.<\/p>\n
Sumarsana rented a room at a boarding house on Jl. Dr. Susilo
\nin Grogol, West Jakarta, and had worked at Lion Star since 1996,
\nshe said.<\/p>\n
\"I saw him for the last time on Friday,\" Hartini said.<\/p>\n
The women were attempting to gain permission to bring the body
\nof their brother back home to Klaten for burial.<\/p>\n
However, police refused to grant them permission, saying the
\ncorpse was the only evidence they had at the moment.<\/p>\n
\"At this time, the deceased is our only clue to lead us to the
\nmurderer,\" Noegroho said.<\/p>\n
The two-star general said the mutilated body could be buried
\nonly after police collected data for their investigation.<\/p>\n
Police detectives are already tracing any information about
\nSumarsana in a number of areas across the capital. Police have
\nbeen questioning Sumarsana's girlfriend Sri Lestari Setyawati
\nsince early Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Sumarsana told his sisters he planned to marry Sri Lestari,
\nbetter-known as Wati, after Idul Fitri, which falls in January
\nnext year. The sisters, however, were never introduced to the
\nwoman.<\/p>\n
Wati, a resident of Tebet, South Jakarta, is a teacher at
\nstate-run junior high school SMP 01 in Tangerang. She also
\nstudies at IKIP Muhammadiyah Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Imam, 48, Wati's brother-in-law, said Wati had known Sumarsana
\nfor six months.<\/p>\n
\"Sumarsana's family planned to come here to get to know our
\nfamily before the two young people got married,\" he said, adding
\nthat the marriage was scheduled to be held in September this
\nyear.<\/p>\n
Wati was hysterical when police showed her a photo of the
\ncorpse's head, Imam said.<\/p>\n
Separately, Rasyidi, 55, the owner of the boarding house where
\nSumarsana stayed, said he saw the victim for the last time on
\nSunday morning.<\/p>\n
\"It was around 10 a.m or 11 a.m. He went out with a young
\nwoman named Titik and never came back to his room,\" Rasyidi said.<\/p>\n
He said Sumarsana rarely talked to the other people in the
\nboarding house.<\/p>\n
\"He used to go to his job in Kapuk at 7 a.m. and come back at
\n6 p.m., going to his room to listen to the radio or watch TV,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Rasyidi said an employee from PT Lion Star called him on
\nTuesday morning and asked why Sumarsana had not showed up for
