Polemics on Sukarno<\/p>\n
We support a call by Vice President Try Sutrisno to cease with
\nthe polemics concerning Sukarno and his role during the 1965
\ncommunist coup because the former president is now deceased.<\/p>\n
The polemics surfaced early this month after former ambassador
\nManai Sophiaan launched his book Kehormatan Bagi Yang Berhak
\n(Honors for the One Who Deserves It) which centers on Sukarno's
\nactivities during those critical years.<\/p>\n
A number of topics have stirred controversy such as the
\nalleged American CIA backing of student movements and Sukarno's
\nlevel of involvement in the coup.<\/p>\n
Most of those responding deplore the argument presented in the
\nbook. Former religious minister Alamsyah Ratuperwiranegara
\ndismissed the book as containing inaccurate information. The so
\ncalled 66 exponents comprising former student leaders plan to sue
\nthe author.<\/p>\n
Minister of Public Housing Akbar Tanjung said that a certain
\npolitical group might be sitting behind the author. "We are still
\nin the dark now. We will get a clearer picture in court," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The book is obviously a hot topic and if the polemics are
\nallowed to continue, could bring untoward circumstances.<\/p>\n
We share the opinion of the vice president. The nation is full
\nof respect for Sukarno, one of the nation's independence
\nproclaimer. We shouldn't let controversy continue to dodge him.<\/p>\n
