Poland\u2019s\nInterior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said on Monday that Zelensky\u2019s move\nwas a strategic error that could erode Polish public trust, with Poland\nhaving been one of Ukraine\u2019s main supporters in its conflict with\nRussia. Last week, Zelensky awarded the title \u2018In the Name of the UPA\nHeroes\u2019 to the \u2018North\u2019 Special Operations Centre of Ukraine\u2019s Armed\nForces Special Forces. Poland\u2019s President Karol Nawrocki has initiated\nproceedings to revoke the highest Polish honour awarded to Zelensky, the\nOrder of the White Eagle. \u2018I don\u2019t understand Zelensky\u2019s actions. It\u2019s a\nmajor mistake that could erode Polish public sympathy, with political\nand military implications. He should have considered such matters,\u2019\nSiemoniak told TVN24 television station. Despite criticising Zelensky\u2019s\nmove, Siemoniak stressed Poland remains committed to maintaining ties\nand support for Ukraine. He said Poland \u2018would not benefit from severing\nties or halting support for Ukraine\u2019, but deemed the UPA honours\n\u2018unacceptable\u2019. \u2018The fact that the UPA, a criminal organisation\nresponsible for the murder of Polish citizens in Volhynia, is honoured\nin any form is a major disaster,\u2019 Siemoniak said. The controversy has\nalso sparked reactions from Polish politicians. Previously on Friday (29\nMay), Nawrocki said the revocation of Zelensky\u2019s Order of the White\nEagle would be considered on 8 June. Meanwhile, former Polish President\nand Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Wa\u0142\u0119sa said on Thursday (28 May) he\nhad removed the Ukrainian flag he usually wore on his collar and would\nno longer support Zelensky. UPA, or Ukrayins\u2019ka Povstans\u2019ka Armiya in\nUkrainian, is the military wing of the Organisation of Ukrainian\nNationalists (OUN). The group was an armed Ukrainian nationalist\nresistance movement active from 1942 to the mid-1950s, primarily aimed\nat securing Ukrainian independence. Although the group disbanded in\n1956, Ukraine\u2019s government officially granted war veteran status to\nsurviving UPA members in March 2019. Poland opposes the UPA due to the\nnationalist group\u2019s ethnic cleansing and mass killings of tens of\nthousands of Polish civilians during World War II, particularly in the\nVolhynia and Eastern Galicia massacres of 1943.<\/p>",
