Pokphand excels in information system<\/p>\n
A new management information system, coupled with an office
\nautomation program, was introduced last January by PT Charoen
\nPokphand Indonesia to face the challenges of the coming
\nglobalization era.<\/p>\n
Called Charoen Pokphand Electronic Information System (CPEIS),
\nthe system greatly enhances the efficiency of this leading agro-
\nindustrial organization.<\/p>\n
CPEIS integrates all on-line systems which were developed
\nearlier in each of the company's plants and offices in Jakarta,
\nTangerang, Semarang, Surabaya and Medan, and thus provides
\nmanagement with accurate and up-to-date information on every
\naspect of its operations. Obviously it has become a very
\neffective tool for a company which produces about 1,000,000
\nmetric tons of animal feed annually in different parts of the
\ncountry, besides breeding and supplying top quality poultry stock
\nfor the Indonesian market.<\/p>\n
The brainchild of Eddy S. Zaoputra, Senior Vice President PT
\nCharoen Pokphand Indonesia, CPEIS is the result of more than 10
\nyears development and substantial investment. It involves
\ndifferent levels of management working together with an
\nelectronic data processing team, most of whose members have
\ninformatics educational backgrounds.<\/p>\n
In fact, electronic information systems have been used
\nseparately in each and every one of the group's offices and
\nplants for many years. Each local network was designed from the
\nvery beginning to become part of a larger and integrated on-line
\nsystem later on. And once the whole design was completed, it was
\nonly a matter of time to set every part in order to become a
\nfully integrated on-line system. It took about six months last
\nyear to train users before it was formally launched early this
\nyear.<\/p>\n
The office automation network now links every part of the
\ngroup's operations, from production sites to finance, marketing
\nand administration departments, from Jakarta to Surabaya,
\nSemarang and Medan. An interactive link was also established with
\nits representative office in Singapore.<\/p>\n
Supported by external economic information collected daily
\nfrom stock markets in Jakarta, Singapore, New York, Tokyo and
\nHong Kong, CPEIS not only provides information on what and how
\nthe group is doing in each and every stage of its operations, but
\nit also helps in making fast decisions whenever deemed necessary
\nin view of concurrent global market conditions.<\/p>\n
About 80 percent of PT Charoen Pokphand Indonesia's production
\ncost is spent on raw materials, thus any fluctuation in raw
\nmaterial prices has great impact on the overall performance of
\nthe company.<\/p>\n
\"The establishment of this CPEIS program gives us great
\nbenefits, especially by its very up-to-date, accurate and
\nextensive information network,\" Eddy said proudly. \"Because of
\nthat, management can make fast decisions, and consequently
\nenhance the company's synergy while simultaneously controlling
\noperational risks. In fact by using this program, we have
\nmade a lot of our operations effective which is invaluable to
\nmanagement.\"<\/p>\n
As demonstrated earlier this month during a special ceremony
\nto celebrate the 10th anniversary of the group's fellowship
\nprogram, CPEIS covers the whole aspect of its management. It
\nprovides an overall picture of the whole group in terms of raw
\nmaterial inventories, production capacity, value and volume of
\nsold products, as well as accrued revenues from sales and
\naccounts receivable.<\/p>\n
Executions of all activities are also inputted, not only as
\ndata but visually as well. Thus management can monitor the exact
\nconditions of each part of its operations not only in figures and
\ngraphs, but also in a visual format. A Jakarta manager can
\nactually monitor containers loading raw materials in Medan,
\nSurabaya, or Semarang while it happens. If something goes wrong,
\na warning message will flash and the exact conditions will be
\nreported through the system and management from faraway can
\nimmediately make any necessary decisions.<\/p>\n
Business relations and partners of PT Charoen Pokphand were
\nvery impressed after watching the demonstration. Gunarni Soeworo,
\npresident director of Bank Niaga, who was present at the
\noccasion, saw the CPEIS as very strategic and supportive for the
\ncompany's activities.<\/p>\n
\"This CPEIS is very impressive, and very useful for making
\nbusiness decisions,\" Soeworo said.<\/p>\n
Christian F. Ferreros, a representative of the Asian Institute
\nof Management in Jakarta, said: \"We have presented this company
\nwith an award for financial management (1994), but obviously this
\ncompany maintains excellence not only in financial management. It
\nhas also developed itself into the information technology.\" The
\nInstitute annually presents awards to companies in the region for
\nexcellence in General Management, Financial Management,
\nMarketing Management, Operations Management, People Development
\nand Management, and Information Technology Management.<\/p>",
