Poaching rife in SE Sulawesi<\/p>\n
KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: Angered by reports about the
\npoaching of endangered animals, Governor La Ode Kaimoeddin has
\nordered strict control over private guns.<\/p>\n
Kaimoeddin specifically asked the local chapter of the
\nIndonesian Target Shooting Association to tighten supervision of
\nits members.<\/p>\n
He said he received frequent reports from citizens that many
\nassociation members misused their guns to illegally hunt deer and
\nanoa (wild buffalo endemic to Sulawesi) in Watubangga forest.<\/p>\n
\"Any members found misusing their guns should be dismissed,\"
\nhe said, reported Antara.<\/p>\n
The governor said reports on the involvement of association
\nmembers in poaching were reasonable given they legally possessed
\nguns.<\/p>\n
The 60,000 hectare Watubangga forest is the second largest
\nhabitat of the protected deer and anoa after the Rawa Aopa
\nWatumohai National Park in Southeast Sulawesi.<\/p>\n
\"Hunting deer and anoa is illegal and residents should help
\nthe police catch the poachers,\" he said.<\/p>\n
East Sulawesi is home to an estimated 300,000 deer, according
